Rango (2011) is a spiritually potent film. In this presentation I show Rango's "Who am I?" journey from "I could be anyone" to "I am nobody". The presentation also tries to bring out the dance of self-deception that goes on in our life all the time. Rango represents you and I who are busy trying to maintain an image in society,

  2. 2. My character is undefined? 1:23 I know who I am. I am the guy, the protagonist, the hero. Every story needs a hero. Who else is better qualified to bask in the adulation of his numerous companions?
  3. 3. Who am I? I could be anyone 2:06 “I could be the sea captain returning from the mighty voyage to reclaim his mechanical arm, or I could be the rogue anthropologist battling pythons down in the Congo!”
  4. 4. The epiphany: Story needs conflict “People, I have had an epiphany. The hero cannot exist in a vacuum. What our story needs is an ironic unexpected event that will propel the hero into conflict!” 3:00
  5. 5. An ironic unexpected event that propels the hero into conflict The fish tank carrying the hero is thrown out of the car’s dicky and hero finds himself on the road floating on a broken glass.
  6. 6. Rango meets his first Guru: Roadkill
  7. 7. Rango learns a metaphor: Getting to the other side Roadkill: I must get to the other side. My quest for enlightenment. We are nothing without it. Rango: Why don’t you wait until there are no cars coming? Roadkill: It’s not so easy as it looks. It’s a metaphor.
  8. 8. Rango gets help from Miss Beans
  9. 9. So who are you, really? Well, I am a man of many epithets. There’s my stage name, my pen name, my avatar. I had a pseudonym once but I had it legally changed.
  10. 10. Rango in a saloon in the Dirt town
  11. 11. Who exactly are you? (Thinking: Who am I? I could be anyone.) (To everyone) I am from the West, beyond horizon, past the sunset, the Far West. The place I come from, we kill a man before breakfast to just work up an appetite. Then we salt him and we pepper him. Then we braise him in clarified butter. And then we eat him.
  12. 12. Name’s…Rango! I’m from everywhere there is trouble brewin’ and Hell waitin’ to be raised. You might say I’m what Hell has already raised up. Name’s… Rango!
  13. 13. With one bullet, Rango kills the hawk
  14. 14. And Rango becomes town Sheriff
  15. 15. Rango meets the second guru: Rattlesnake Jake
  16. 16. He’s actually starting to believe it Our Sheriff has been playing the hero for so long, he’s actually starting to believe it. Call in Rattlesnake Jake.

  19. 19. Nothing but a fake and a coward Listen close you pathetic fraud, this is my town now. If I ever see you again, I will take your soul straight down to hell!

  22. 22. Journey to the other side begins Metaphorically, only when the thought traffic subsides, which happens only when the process of becoming subsides, there is space to cross the Highway.
