What is English Opens Doors? <ul><li>Created in 2003 by: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Chilean Ministry of Education </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>United Nations Development Programme </li></ul></ul>Works to improve the quality and foster the growth of English language teaching and learning. <ul><li>Initatives include: </li></ul><ul><li>Volunteer Program </li></ul><ul><li>Public Speaking Competition </li></ul><ul><li>Debates </li></ul><ul><li>Semester abroad </li></ul><ul><li>Winter and Summer Camps </li></ul><ul><li>English Town </li></ul>

As one initiative of the English Opens Doors Program, the Volunteer Program brings native and near native English-speaking volunteers to work in Chilean public schools to compensate for the lack of exposure to native English speakers faced by most Chilean public school students and teachers.
  5. 5. <ul><li>In 2004, 15 volunteers were placed in the Region of Antofagasta for 4 months. </li></ul><ul><li>In 2006, Michelle Bachelet was elected President and passed 2 mandates directly related to improving English teaching in Chile. Her mandates greatly contributed to the growth of the English Opens Doors Volunteer Program. </li></ul><ul><li>In 2008, the Program placed 555 volunteers throughout Chile. </li></ul>Program History
