2018 is the year of Page Speed – it’s one of the hottest topics in SEO conferences at the moment but…why is it so important? Besides being essential to creating a seamless visitor experience on your website, page speed is also a critical factor when it comes to ranking well on Google.

Most digital marketers and SEO teams recognise this importance and are willing to improve speed within their organisations. However, what’s important to the more digitally-inclined within a business isn’t necessarily top of the list for stakeholders. This means that implementing a page speed project can often become an infinite struggle!

In this session Victoria will share her learnings from building a successful business case for implementing page speed. You will learn:

– Why it’s important to improve page speed
– The best ways to measure page speed
– Which are the metrics that matter
– What the commercial benefits are of improving page speed
– How to coordinate work with other teams
– The importance of governance and reporting

  4. 4. @vykolsina at #DigitalGaggle 2018 Year of Page Speed (for SEO people only since nobody else seems to care) ● 2010: Google made site speed a ranking factor for the desktop search results. ● March 2018: New mobile-first index: the mobile version of the website is prioritised. ● July 2018: “Speed Update” - Google started using mobile page speed as a ranking factor in their mobile search results. 4

  7. 7. @vykolsina at #DigitalGaggle Page Speed is like a neglected child Who is responsible for page speed? Everyone! Who is measuring it? Who is measuring it? ………….. (The SEO team has to do it) 7
  8. 8. @vykolsina at #DigitalGaggle Let’s measure: 8
  9. 9. @vykolsina at #DigitalGaggle I’m sure there’s an app for that 9 ● How hard can it be to measure your top 20 pages against your competitors(10)? 200 pages per week ● Standard solution: GT Metrics No bulk upload nor download “I’m sure somebody had the same problem before and has a solution for it so I will Google it.”
  10. 10. @vykolsina at #DigitalGaggle “You can use the API” #fakenews 10
  11. 11. @vykolsina at #DigitalGaggle Things that I learned about APIs: ● You can use Google Spreadsheets to connect to one. ● A ready-made script that you found on Reddit might not work. ● Even if it works, the proxy might prevent from the data being sent/received. ● If that’s the case, you need proxy permissions or 3rd party infrastructure to do it. ● All of this it’s quite hard to do without the right technical knowledge. Try to get a dev onboard , otherwise you will die or become smarter. 11

  18. 18. @vykolsina at #DigitalGaggle Who are the others who that I have to persuade to get this done? ● Stakeholders ● Project owners ● The Boss 18
  19. 19. @vykolsina at #DigitalGaggle Questions from the Boss 1. How much is that metric (indexes) in seconds? 2. What’s the commercial benefit of the project? 3. What do we need to make it happen? 19
  20. 20. @vykolsina at #DigitalGaggle The sad truth: Nobody cares about Google but you. So let’s talk to the stakeholders about metrics they care about: ● Traffic ● Conversions ● Profit 20 Business Case

  22. 22. @vykolsina at #DigitalGaggle Building a Business Case 22
  23. 23. @vykolsina at #DigitalGaggle 1. How much is that in seconds? ● Seconds is a metric that can be understood easily by non technical stakeholders. ● The pandora box: what should we be measuring? What metrics are important to technical and non technical stakeholders? ● Start small: maybe you don’t need 200 pages to begin with. 23
  24. 24. @vykolsina at #DigitalGaggle Measure what matters It’s very likely that you are measuring the wrong metrics (or maybe it’s just me). According to Google what you should be measuring is: ● Lighthouse index ● Speed index ● First contentful paint 24

  32. 32. @vykolsina at #DigitalGaggle 3. What do we need to make it happen? ● Dev team please help me to: ○ Define resource and materials ○ Define if new people are needed for this project and how much would it cost. ○ Assign measurable values to recommendations. ○ Build a roadmap. ○ Provide timelines. 32
  33. 33. @vykolsina at #DigitalGaggle Non SEO advice: Be the leader or somebody else will ● “Take the lead - be involved every meeting as early as possible. ● Attend daily, weekly updates/stand-ups 33

  41. 41. @vykolsina at #DigitalGaggle Governance & reporting 41
  42. 42. @vykolsina at #DigitalGaggle Page Speed is never finished: ● A performance team should be accountable to Page Speed and SEO should be part of it. ● Reports to senior management/the Boss should contain Page Speed (once a week). ● All new pages have to be built with the standards that we defined as “best in class” for page speed. ● New pages shouldn’t be signed-off without the standards mentioned before been met.
