WHAT DO SFER MEMBERS DO?act as policy advocates: SFER members supportpro-student state legislation while learning aboutthe “politics of education reform”raise campus awareness: SFER members host guestspeakers, table, and host educational events suchas ﬁlm screenings and “dinner discussions” wheremembers can discuss issues in ed reform andoptional or assigned reading- often with invitedprofessors, graduate, or undergraduate students
collaborate with other campus SFER groups as wellas work with the national organization and itspartners, the Done Waiting Coalition and NationalSchool Choice Weekvisit schools at high performing schools intraditionally disadvantaged or low-performingdistricts including: Excel Academy, Roxbury Prep,KIPP RISE Academy, KIPP SPARK, North StarAcademy, and Harlem Children’s Zone PromiseAcademy, among others.

While we recognize the challenges ofpoverty, we believe that a great education is theﬁrst step for a student to succeed — a schoolmust not abandon its primary mission of providingan excellent education for its students.
SFER Believes in Quality School Options andCommunity EngagementWe believe that parents and students should be able toselect excellent schools that enable students to becomeactive, informed citizens. Parents and students deserveaccess to meaningful information about the quality oftheir local schools, and school systems must provideparents and community members with avenues toparticipate in their children’s education.
SFER Believes in Rigorous Standards andMeaningful Assessment We believe that students deserve clear, high standards andrigorous, meaningful assessment to accompany a culture ofhigh expectations. We believe that transparent andeffective use of data can give teachers vital informationabout how to meet individual student needs. However, webelieve assessment should be a means, and not an end, tostudent learning.
SFER Believes in Great Teachers and LeadersWe believe that great teachers and leaders are central to athriving school, and as students, we value our teachersenormously. We believe that great teachers deserve to berespected and recognized, and that teaching our nation’schildren is a privilege, not a right. We believe that schoolsand school systems must have the ability to attract,support, and retain the best teachers possible.
