  • Welcome! Wow - we are honored to see so many of you here today.
Hopefully, it wasn’t only the rumor about free food that brought all of you here ☺
Its completely understandable if that’s the case – we were right there where you are today at one point…
Thanks for coming out today. We promise you that you will not be disappointed.
Many thanks to Kimberly & CORE team, who were nothing short of being awesome in putting this event together!!!
    This is a talk about:
A hot technology topic (Big Data) and
Silicon Valley way of solving real-world problems
But most importantly, it’s a life lesson on how to think about your career (and potentially entrepreneurship)
  • Lets start with staring at 3 prominent industry leaders:
Mohak is the VP of Engineering @ LinkedIn, Aditya is a VP of Engineering at Dropbox and Marissa is the CEO of Yahoo!

They are some of the top influencers made solid careers. All of this in a very short span of time.

    What is common between them?
  • There are millions of people with the essential traits of being successful. But, only few of them like Mohak, Aditya and Marissa make it to the top in optimal time.

Bottom line: They didn’t get a job. They focused on getting a career.
  • The lures of full time job without long term consideration can often lead to what we call “I missed the boat syndrome”
  • I spent too bit more time climbing the wrong hill. Microsoft is a great company and I learnt a ton. But, it was harder to get to my long term ambition.
    Don’t climb the wrong hill.

Teaser rhetorical question #1: So, do you want to start your career by climbing a small hill or a large one?
Teaser rhetorical question #2: Do you want to wait for 7 years (like Mohak) before you do that or right out of the gate?
  • I spent too bit more time climbing the wrong hill. Microsoft is a great company and I learnt a ton. But, it was harder to get to my long term ambition.
    Don’t climb the wrong hill.
  • These large hills (often referred to as “unicorns”) born everyday. One needs to stay in the know by following tons of news feeds such as techcrunch, angellist, Venturebeat.
Let us say, you managed to stay buzzed, how do you sift through such large amounts of data and signals?
  • These large hills (often referred to as “unicorns”) born everyday. One needs to stay in the know by following tons of news feeds such as techcrunch, angellist, Venturebeat.
Let us say, you managed to stay buzzed, how do you sift through such large amounts of data and signals?
  • Let us assume that you’ve spent time assimilating this information and made your own list, what criteria do you use to tell if this is a good company?

Can you throw the names of few of your favorite companies? …

Let us say you picked ..
Can you tell if .. YES
    .. YES
    .. Not sure
    .. Not sure
    .. Not sure
  • Good evening UPenn! Before I jump into the technical part of the presentation, can I get a quick show of hands of iPhone users? Android?

It is an honor to be in front of some of the brightest minds in the world. As I talk about the engineering behind this amazing product, our hope is that you will walk away with the silicon valley way of algorithms to big data.
  • Use link prediction to see if there is a potentially good interaction between the company and you.
