the famous thumbnails

They are a mini version of an image that's being planned. We do the minimum possible to test composition and process strategies in a smaller sized study, rehearsing the fundamental steps of a bigger work. In this format we can quickly anticipate bad choices or, even better, learn through accidents that we can later take advantage of.

She who fails faster goes further

From the General to the Particular always! Look for the bigger shapes, the more general shapes of all. Crank out many variations. Lateralizing is the law. The more approaches you experience in a thumbnail fase, all the more confident you will be when execution time comes.

I cannot emphasize this enough: It's of the utmost importance and it takes a time to be completely dominated. This is the main trick to keep a final execution full of life, orchestrated by a wise simplicity, that we can only find through thumbnailing.

Unfortunately, this is harder than it looks, but is the biggest step to becoming a consistently successful Visual Quester. It will save you hours of suffering with paint, ensuring great confidence and pleasure in the process.

What is the price of simple?

The answer is everything you've got. Everything. Save the bells and whistles to the final execution time and even so, save them to the very end.

A smart man once said:

“Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”
