What's in the Numbers? A workshop for mastering the power of financial toolsStrengtheningPGHArts
Presented by Kim Cook and Alice Richardson, Nonprofit Finance Fund, August 23, 2010, for the Strengthening Pittsburgh Arts Kickoff Event at Father Ryan Arts Center
Have you been asked to manage to a balance sheet? Do you wonder what it means to get “beyond break even”? Have you heard the term “below the line” and wondered what line they were referring to? Do metrics sound like a system for tabulating football scores that you didn’t learn in college? This workshop is designed to address issues for both new and experienced nonprofit managers facing increasingly challenging demands in the use of financial tools. As the economy continues to remain uncertain, many organizations are revisiting current budgeting practices and exploring new options to better navigate this changing environment. Especially valuable for managers of organizations with budgets between $200,000 and $5 million, this workshop encompasses a review of how to approach budgeting for successful annual financial management and external communications, how to use program economics as a method for making adjustments on the margin to improve overall performance, and concepts for thinking about and adjusting scenarios when operational changes occur.
Presented by Marilyn Coleman, Marilyn Coleman Consulting, August 23, 2010, for the Strengthening Pittsburgh Arts Kickoff Event at Father Ryan Arts Center
The road ahead may look a bit long and treacherous, but with the right fine-tuning, you can prepare your organization to miss the major bumps along the way and go the distance. It also takes a look at characteristics of healthy arts organizations, demonstrates how to focus on what’s truly mission critical, assess the mission and financial effectiveness of programs and projects, and manage effectively so that projects achieve desired results. The presentation also reviews what funders look for when considering requests for support and what they’re saying about prospects for the near future.

The document discusses the phenomenon of polarization of light. It defines polarization as restricting the electric vector vibrations of light along a plane. It describes the basics of plane waves and different states of polarization including linear, elliptical, and circular polarization. It discusses various methods by which light can become polarized, such as dichroism, reflection, scattering, and birefringence. Birefringence is defined as the splitting of a light ray into two rays with different refractive indices when passing through certain anisotropic materials.

M&S Global LLC aims to design an efficient WAN network to connect its metropolitan locations across large geographical areas like cities and countries. The WAN network will connect multiple LANs using Ethernet and act as a single LAN segment. It will utilize high-speed layer 2 switches and provide full mesh connectivity independent of higher layers. The WAN design will offer secure, segmented networking with services from 128 kbps to 1Gbps using technologies like Ethernet, ATM, DSL and more.
The document discusses a case study involving Swastik Ltd., a company that carries on a jute business. Swastik Ltd. passed a special resolution to alter its memorandum of association (MOA) to include conducting an additional rubber business. Michael Porter developed the Five Forces model in the 1970s to analyze industry profitability and competitive intensity. The model examines five forces: the threat of new entrants, the power of suppliers and buyers, the threat of substitute products, and the intensity of rivalry among existing competitors. Porter argued that understanding these forces could help determine an industry's weaknesses and identify potential opportunities for competitive advantage. The model helps explain why some industries are more profitable than others and allows companies to assess the attractiveness of an industry.
