VOCAL MUSIC OF INDONESIA

  1. 1. LESSON 10: VOCAL MUSIC OF INDONESIA
  2. 2. A number of songs have been composed that center on the happenings in the village and to the lives of children, or simply to accompany the popular puppet plays Wayang Kulit and Sendratari.
  3. 3. Wayang Kulit- Performances of shadow puppet theatre are accompanied by a gamelan orchestra in Java, and by gender wayang in Bali. Sendratari- A modern Javanese dance-drama without dialogue, now spread more widely in Indonesia.
  4. 4. Indonesian Music has always been associated with the gamelan. •Gamelan- a generic name given to Indonesia’s musical ensemble.
  5. 5. Vocal music is used to ornament the gamelan music. The tones, produced by a female soloist known as pesindhen, are more often compared with the sound of the suling, a ribbon flute, whereas the male unison chorus called gerong and the mixed chorus, gerong bandayan, work as ornamentals of the melody originating from the rebab, a twostringed instrument.
  6. 6. Both vocal and instrumental music are based on two basic tone scales known as the slendro and the pelog. These two scales are played by two different metallophones in the gamelan.
