The Russian Premier League (RPL) is the country’s top football division, with 16 teams competing for the league’s top prize. Since its introduction at the end of 2001 (initially as the Russian Football Premier League), Zenit St. Petersburg has been its most successful team, having won eight titles. Other previous winners include a trio of Moscow-based clubs (CSKA Moscow, Spartak Moscow and Lokomotiv Moscow) and Rubin Kazan.
