Arctic shipping routes are maritime pathways that vessels use to navigate through the Arctic either wholly or in part. Many of these routes are only accessible for short parts of each year due to ice levels.

  2. 2. Victor Olerskiy Five Routes There are currently five significant routes through the Arctic, three of which – the Northwest Passage, the Northeast Passage and the Transpolar Sea Route – connect the Pa- cific to the Atlantic. The Arctic shipping routes are maritime pathways that vessels use to navigate through the Arctic either wholly or in part. Many of these routes are only accessible for short parts of each year due to ice levels.
  3. 3. Victor Olerskiy Northern Sea Route follows the Russian coast from east to west while the Arctic Bridge is an inland route linking Cana- da and Russia. Navigability Navigability varies across the Arctic shipping routes depending on the weather and the time of year. Climate change is gradually making the routes more accessible as ice floes recede further for longer periods each year. The Transpolar Sea Route is the least accessible, with only 10 days of unsafe, icebreaker-led access in 2010. The Northern Sea Route and the Northeast Passage are the most accessi- ble of the five routes. "Projections for ongoing collaboration between Canada and Russia were discussed in an interview with Russia’s Deputy Minister of Transport.
