Attracting Young American Hindus <ul><li>We can make our community stronger by making the younger generations feel more connected to Hinduism. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>American born and/or raised Hindus </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Non-Indian born Hindus </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Converts to Hinduism </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Women are nurturers and must play a significant role in changing the current culture to integrate Hindu youth and non-Indian born Hindus into the Hindu family. </li></ul>

My Story A Hindu of non-Indian decent <ul><li>Born in Hawaii, USA to non-Indian parents </li></ul><ul><li>Raised with Hindu traditions and beliefs </li></ul><ul><li>Never felt like I belonged anywhere – found it hard to label my beliefs </li></ul><ul><li>Learned about Hinduism in college </li></ul><ul><li>Would have liked a network of people to share my beliefs or answer my questions </li></ul>

Problems Facing Youth <ul><li>Feel different or alienated </li></ul><ul><li>Wish to be with and like their friends </li></ul><ul><li>Do not understand the meaning behind traditions – particularly rituals </li></ul><ul><li>Unsure how to explain Hinduism to their friends </li></ul><ul><li>Limited access to faith based activity </li></ul><ul><li>Face pressures to convert </li></ul>

What Women Can Do! <ul><li>Reach out to those who are new and seeking to understand Hindu faith – offer friendship, mentorship, or simply acceptance </li></ul><ul><li>Create a welcoming environment in the temple community including events or gatherings that would be attractive to youth </li></ul><ul><li>Explain all aspects of Hinduism – beyond rituals - to children or others who want to know </li></ul>

The Hindu American Foundation <ul><li>An advocacy organization for the two million strong Hindu American community </li></ul><ul><li>Ensure the Hindu American voice is heard and the community’s needs are met by elected officials, media, academics, interfaith groups and the public at large </li></ul><ul><li>Three steps of advocacy: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Educating others about Hinduism </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Speaking up about issues affecting Hindus </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Building and leveraging strategic relationships </li></ul></ul>
