  4. 4. ABOUT CHERIYAL PAINTING: The Cheriyal paintings represent a distinct local invention, based mainly on local traditions. The Nakashis are the artists of Telangana and the scrolls constitute a key element of the social and cultural setting of Telangana. ORIGIN OF CHERIYAL ART: These paintings were mostly confined to Cheriyal village, and hence called Cheriyal scrolls. PRESENT SCENARIO: Due to its unique fashion and traditional features, recent Cheriyal paintings have received the GI (Geographical Indication) label. Few of the closest artists can retain their colour through this precise technique. Showing pictures of singles (instead of solid scrolls) is said to decorate the walls. PRODUCT BREIF: These scrolls are written in narrative form, similar to movies or comics, depicting stories from Indian mythology, and are closely related to Puranas and epic short stories.
  5. 5. The common themes are from the Krishna Leela, Ramayana, Mahabharata, Shiva Puranam, Markandeya Puranam interspersed with the ballads and folk-stories of communities like Gauda, Madiga and so on.
  6. 6. PRODUCT PROPOSAL: The art which i have chosen is cheriyal art it is a scroll painting. so i was thinking to make a painting that narrating village culture. TOOLS AND RAW MATERIALS: canvas (s ready to be painted upon) brushes (A set of polyester haired brushes, used in modern age for painting purpose) colors(natural or acrylic colors like red, blue, yellow, white and black etc) scissor ( used in cutting the canvas of required dimensions, for painting.) scale ( used to measure the canvas and to put accurate horizontal and vertical lines)
  7. 7. PROCESS OF CHERIYAL ART: Once the canvas and the colors are ready, Cheriyal painting artist starts with a very light outline with a graphite on the canvas of whatever the scene he has to depict in the scroll then fills the color to the background in bright red but excluding the outlines which has drawn. then fills the basic colors with thick brush (which is numbered in the range of 3 to 12) onto the characters and allows it for drying then enhances the details such as jewels, hairlines, eyes with much finer brush strokes. After the scene is depicted he adds attractive border to the complete painting, which are decorated with flowers and leafs with the finer brush strokes. By this, it completes the process of painting and it is usually rolled and stored. The one which depicts single scene and are of much smaller size are framed. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
