Central IdeaPeople’s actions have an effect on theworld.Lines of Inquiry People have a positive influence on the worldaround them by reducing pollution. People have a negative influence on the worldaround them by causing pollution. People working together have the power tomake a change in the world to reduce pollution.
  3. 3. Key Concept: FormWhat is pollution?Pollution is wastes and chemicalsthat contaminates the water, air,or soil.
  4. 4. Key Concept: ConnectionHow is pollution harmful?Pollution is harmful to both people andanimals because of all the wastes andchemicals. There are different types ofpollution that are harmful.
  5. 5. Type of PollutionWater PollutionWater gets polluted when oil spills or wastes fromgarbage gets in the water. People and animalsneed clean drinking water. When water is pollutedof wastes and people and animal drink the pollutedwater, it can cause health problems for people andanimals. Some animals can die from drinkingunclean water.
  6. 6. Type of PollutionLitteringLitter is dangerous. It creates garbage. It can causepeople and animals to get sick. Litter can cause animals todie, especially if they get stuck to something like a sodaholder or if they eat something harmful. It is not good foranimals to get trapped from the things we throw away onthe ground. Litter also destroys parks and beaches.
  7. 7. Type of PollutionAir PollutionAir pollution happens when things that are not normally there areadded to the air. It can result to poisons in the air. People whobreathe in these poisons are at a higher risk of having asthma andother damage to their body system. Animals are also affected by thepoisons in the air.Air pollution is the most harmful pollution in our environment. Airpollution is cause by the smoke from cars, buses, trucks, trains, andfactories. Even smoke from burning leaves and cigarettes are harmful.Air pollution can lead to lung cancer, asthma, allergies, and breathingproblems.
  8. 8. FactsThe unhealthy things from pollution affect morethan 100 million people in the world. In placeswhere pollution is very bad, babies are born withbirth defects and people die sooner because ofhaving cancer and other diseases.

Facts In 2010, Americans make about 250 million tons ofgarbage. Americans generate 30 billion foam cups, 220 milliontires, and 1.8 billion diapers every year. 40% of America’s rivers and 46% of American’s lakesare too polluted for fishing or swimming. About 6,400 people die every year in Mexico City andmore than 1 million people suffer from breathingproblems because of air pollution.
  10. 10. Key Concept: ReflectionPollution is very bad for our world. Pollution is amajor problem in our world. Did you know that wecan reduce pollution but we cannot stop itforever?What couldwe do to helpreduce pollutionthen?
  11. 11. FactsPollution is mostly caused by people because theydrive cars, have smoking factories, and throwgarbage on the ground.One way to reduce pollution is to carpool so that itis one less car. Or if we can, during nice weather,we can walk or ride a bike instead of drivingbecause it is much healthier for us.
  12. 12. FactsAnother way to reduce pollution is to recycle. Things werecycle we can reuse. That is helpful to our environment.The most helpful way to reduce pollution is to not litterand help clean up the earth. So if you see trash on theground, pick it up and you will be reducing pollution. Youwill do yourself, others, and the animals a great favor!
  13. 13. ActionEarth Day was April 22nd, 2013. Earth Day is a special daythat celebrates the Earth. Earth Day was born on April22nd, 1970 in San Francisco, California. Earth Day is areminder for us to appreciate nature and find ways toprotect our environment. On Earth Day, our classroomtook a trip around our school community and picked uptrash as a way to reduce pollution. It taught us theimportance of keeping our environment clean. For now on,we will not litter and will help pick up trash whenever wesee trash.
