Concept of my kannada novel tarangini teeradalli

  1. 1. 1Concept of my first Kannada Novel-“Tarangini Teeradalli” (ತರಂಗಣ ತೀರದಲಲ )(Book released on 21st October’2012)The South Indian tiny and secluded village Bhimanadoddi(now renamed as Taranginipura) situated on the bank ofriver Tarangini has people belonging to various casteand creed. In this village, there are houses belongingto Brahmins, Vakkaligas, Lingayats, goldsmith, barber,Muslims, Christian and scheduled caste & scheduledtribes. Villagers are involved in various economic, social and cultural functions to maintain socialharmony. Their sense of unity shows, when theyparticipate in all the festivals. Bhimanadoddi mayappear isolated and removed from the map of India, butit is compensated by the literate villagers. Theiractive involvement in ceremonies and ritualsirrespective of the religion created a wonderful bondof love and affection. The regular involvement of thevillagers in Ganesha Chaturthi, Dasara, Deepavali,Kaarahunnime and Satyanarayana puja, Muharrum,Christmas and Good Friday shows how united they are.Earlier Ramachar Bevinur an old man and priest of theMaruti Temple read out Puranas, religious discourses,on special occasions.Present priest of the Maruti temple, Keshava Murthycontinued daily pujas to keep alive the belief of thevillagers the sense of existence of God. Villagers hadbelief that by participating in all rituals they willbe protected from famine, disease, death and despair. If the rainfall fails, the villagers fall at God’sfeet. There is also another temple of GoddessMariyamma, who is popularly called as a “Graama Devata”(Village Goddess). Every year devotees arrange annual

They enjoy participatingin the various adventurous games and indulge inshopping in the makeshift shops. During this period acattle fair is arranged by the gram panchayat. Thechoice of this tiny secluded village setting isstrategic in view of the noble cause to develop a modelvillage of India.Protagonist of the novel Dheerendra ManjunathaTaranginipura (in short ‘DHEEMANT’, which means inKannada wise, learned, intelligent and smart) got theinspiration from the famous model villages of India. Hewent to three selected model villages of India andinteracted with the persons responsible and gainedthorough knowledge on model village.People with this name ‘Dheemant’ tend to be very warmand nurturing. Such persons are extremely reliable andare often found taking care of others rather than him. They have deep need to try and create harmony in theirsurroundings. Bhimanadoddi village is an enchantingstory of how the illiterate poor villagers educatethemselves and continue studies with zeal andenthusiasm. The impossible task was possible throughthe wonderful ideas of a delightful local manDheerendra, an ex- Indian Foreign Service professional, who commands not only wisdom and humor but a rarequality of team spirit. He was very much depressed, when he witnessed the entire villagers were under thegrip of one disease or the other. In the absence ofmedical facility the death rate was increasingeveryday. He came to India on leave, when he wasworking as a Diplomat at Washington DC. Two days beforeof his visit, he lost his parents on the same day. The
  3. 3. 3horrible situation of village Bhimanadoddi influencedhim very much. He took a bold decision of resigningfrom 20 years of service and stay in the village withnoble cause to improve the condition of the villagers. His wife Shailaja was also equally influenced by thesituation prevailing in the village. She gave heracceptance to go ahead with the noble mission. Behindevery successful man, there is a woman. Shailaja hasproved it by dedicating herself to the noble cause.Apart from Shailaja, there were other persons andinstitutions, which helped him to achieve the goal. Thevested interest people in the village created number ofproblems to Dheerendra. Even these cruel peoplethreatened to murder him, in case if he continued hisefforts. He faced all the situations boldly andachieved his goal after six years. The technique of the novel is an attempt to follow aunique method of traditional systems of remote villagewith a modern outlook. Novel begins with the openinglines of nature’s description of sun rise and itsbeautiful scene of colorful rays on the riverTarangini. The people visit the river early in themorning to enjoy the natural scene. The place hasbecome tourist centre attracted by Indians andforeigners. People coming from other places watch thebeautiful sun rise in their own perspective. Forinstance, a scientist will see with a scientific mind.A research student will see with research mind. Areligious person views the scene with devotion in hismind. Children enjoy the scene too. Others have come topass the time. Their activities are highlighted. The title of the Kannada novel “Tarangini Teeradalli’has got wider meaning. Tarangini is a holy river.Teeradalli means on the bank of the river. It is a
  4. 4. 4story of the people on the bank of the river. The storyis about six decades of four generations ups and downsof the river bank villagers is depicted. The naturalscene of sunrise and sunset on the river, mountains, big banyan tree with platform are some of theattractions for the people of India and abroad. It is a sincere attempt to use innovative Kannadalanguage with creative ideas. It is also a sincereattempt to narrate the developments that shook thevillage is expressed in an effective way. The novel issignificant because of its noble theme. There areabout 80 people in the novel in one context or theother. About 20 to 25 people directly or indirectlyinteract with the protagonist. Out of 3000 populationof the village about 90% favor for development of thevillage. The 10% of the population were highlyinfluenced section of the village and rightly called asvested interest people stopped the noble cause withtheir actions. The hero of the novel Dheerendra belongsto third generation. The villagers felt the sense ofcommunity and freedom for the welfare of the village. The novel is an attempt to depict systematically as howthe villagers join the mainstream of movement to reachthe goal. The tension between the village community andthe vested interest people was of do or die situation.Ultimately the villagers won under the able leadershipof Dheerendra. He was able to get the support andactive participation of all of his friends to achievethe goal. The novel is divided into 30 chapters. First and secondchapters are dealt with the nature’s beauty and theattractive picture of the model village Taranginipura(earlier Bhimanadoddi). One chapter is exclusivelydealt with the peaceful life of first generation with

Fewchapters are dealt with childhood life of protagonistand his friends. The end is happy as well astragedy. It is happy for the villagers of theBhimanadoddi. The village has become an advanced modeland smart village of India. It is a tragedy for thosevested interests, who indulged in unlawful activitieseven, attempted the murder of a protagonist for theirpersonal gain. They had a criminal record of duping thepublic money and murder of innocent people. Dheerendrawas on their hit list. With God’s grace, he survivedfrom these unwanted social elements. But his left legwas injured during the shoot out. He was admitted inthe hospital and recovered from the injury. The wickedpersons were sentenced 15 years imprisonment with oneyear rigorous imprisonment. The associates of thesecriminals were also sentenced imprisonment according totheir crime. After discharge from the hospital, Dheerendra came toBheemandoddi and realized that the prominent familiesof the village Patel and Sahukar will be vanishedwithout a legal heir. He thought it should not happen. He suggested Sumangala (wife of Sadashiv Sahukar) toarrange marriage of Durga and Jyoti. She accepted thesuggestion and accordingly arranged the marriage. Afterone year Durga and Jyoti gave birth to male babies. There is a changed peaceful atmosphere in the houses ofPatel and Sahukar.
