2. Public Authority
• An RTI can be used to get information from public
authorities only.
• Public authorities:
(i) established by law;
(ii) controlled by government;
(iii) received substantial funds from government
• Examples: Central and State Governments,,
Central Universities, State Bank of India, Indian
Postal Service, etc.
3. Information
• Any kind of information like emails, logbooks,
records, contracts, etc.
• Information that cannot be sought:
(i) harms the security or economic interests or
India;
(ii) prohibited by Court;
(iii) intellectual property;
(iv) received from foregn govt.
4. Application Form
• Can be sent through email or post.
• Addressed to Central Public Information
Officer or State Public Information Officer.
• Can be written in Hindi, English or official
language of that area.
5. Fee
• Prescribed fee must be paid with the
application.
• Can be paid in cash, cheque or DD.
• Payable to Accounts Officer of that public
authority.
• No fee from BPL people.
• Extra charges for providing information.
6. Personal Information of the Applicant
• Only the contact address is to be provided.
• No personal details.
• No reasons should be given.
7. Duration
• Maximum 30 days
• 48 hrs - if matter concerns life or liberty of a
person
• If information not given within this time, it will
be provided free of cost.
8. Rejection
• Grounds for rejection will be given.
• Time limit to appeal against the rejection will
be specified.
• Appellate authority will also be specified.
