There are two forms of Energy
 Fossil Fuel
 Crude oil
 Natural Gas
 Nuclear
 All these are stored
energy & subject to
exhaustible at the rate of
our consumption.

ISO 14001
• ISO – International organisation for standardisation
• ISO 14001 is a certificate given for up keeping of good
environment.
• Becoming a ISO 14001 company, It will have a
recognition & good public image.
• Production cost will be reduced & Increase profit.
• To get this certificate we have to;
• Keep / practice environment friendly activities
– keep the clean & Green
– Minimise any wastages like leakages, loss of equipments or
high energy consumption etc
er.vs.ekbote@gmail.com
Environmental Policy
• Should be typical to their work
• Should reflect the emissions, effluent and
wastes
• The policy should reflect continual
improvement and prevention of pollution
• State compliance with legal and other
requirements
• The policy should be known to interested
public
er.vs.ekbote@gmail.com
Losses / Defects / Wastes
er.vs.ekbote@gmail.com
EMS
• It is built around
• identifying ,
• prioritizing,
• controlling and
• improvement of these elements that
interacts with the environment

Environmental Work Instructions
• Aspect / Activity: Paper Use
• Think before print. Is it really needed to print it?
• Using both sides of paper for printing- i.e. practicing Duplex printing
• Use minimum margins on documents. The smaller margin of .75
inch (1.90cm) is OK in most cases.
• Minimizing use of paper for regular/ routine office works.
• Practicing re-use of one-sided paper for notes, sketches, rough
work, etc.
• Use electronic storage rather than paper storage for material
• Use email (electronic mail) rather than paper mail when it can
• Share electronic documents rather than printing them

STEPS IN EMP IMPLEMENTATION
• Review / study existing situation / data
• Evolve reduction opportunities / modification plan
• Preliminary technical evaluation of alternative
options
• Detailed cost estimate & quotations from suppliers
• Management approval / sanction
• Release of P.O / Procurement
• Installation / Implementation
• Trial run / review
• Check Effectiveness
er.vs.ekbote@gmail.com
Legal Requirements
• Understand legal and other requirements
and remain committed to comply with
them
– Obtain current consent from PCB
– Meet emission limits for Air emissions and
Water effluents and other consent conditions
– Pay water charges or CESS for quantity of
water consumed
er.vs.ekbote@gmail.com
Objectives and Targets
• Objectives are broad goals for environmental
management
– Reduce water consumption, Reduce energy
consumption etc.
• Targets are Specific, Measure, Achievable,
Realistic and Time bound- SMART
– Water consumption reduction from 2.2 TMC to 2
TMC by two years
– Auxiliary power consumption from 9.5% to 8.5%
by two years
er.vs.ekbote@gmail.com
Structure & Responsibility
• All employees-
– Understand Environmental Policy
– Identify aspects and impacts
– Understand and follow their procedures and
work instructions
– Give suggestions / non-conformance issues
on environment to top management
er.vs.ekbote@gmail.com
Training
• All employees-
– Receive training with interest and gain
competence to carryout assigned tasks
– Understand global and local Environmental
issues and their linkage
– Operate and maintain the equipment in a way
without affecting the environment
er.vs.ekbote@gmail.com
Communication
• All employees must be aware of and
participate in internal communication
process
– Communicate to top management on
environmental issues/non-compliances
– Understand and follow relevant emergency
procedures
– Follow safety practices / Methods
er.vs.ekbote@gmail.com
Emergency Preparedness and
Response
• What are possible accidents and incidents
in our department
• Participate in mock drill actively
• Know where fire extinguishers are
installed and how to use them
• Participate in emergency preparedness
and response planning and test exercises
er.vs.ekbote@gmail.com
Monitoring and Measurement
• You cannot manage unless you monitor and
measure-
• Report to management about calibration of
instruments such as flow meters, gas
monitoring instruments etc and other
instruments for measurement of key
characteristics of operations before due date
• Report environmental (Legal) non-compliance
issues such as effluent / emission parameters
exceeding standard to top managementer.vs.ekbote@gmail.com
Non-conformance, corrective and
preventive action
• Non-conformances are basically excess
electricity consumption, excess fuel
consumption, overflow, accidents, incidents
etc.
• Report non-conformances during normal /
abnormal and emergency situations for
corrective and preventive action
• Report legal non-compliance issues such as
effluent / emission parameters exceeding
standard to top management IMMEDIATELY
er.vs.ekbote@gmail.com
EMS Audit
 During internal audit generally it will be asked for;
 Company policy
 ISO Files
 Work activity / chart
 About your aspects and its’ impacts
 Status of Conformance / non-compliance issues.
 About objectives and targets
 About work and how it affects (impacts) the environment
 About operational control procedures/ relevant work
instructions applicable to the work area/equipment
 About safety and emergency issues in your department
er.vs.ekbote@gmail.com
Management Review
• Read the management review minutes
posted every 6 months
• Management review tells about what EMS
has done for last 6 months and what it will do
for next 6 months
• Implement any management directive in
regard to EMS which may be issued from
time to time
er.vs.ekbote@gmail.com
Waste is a useful Material in wrong form in wrong
place.Waste can be in form of:
 Defective product
 Air Emissions
 Wastewater Discharges
 Solid Wastes
 Hazardous Wastes
 Production Loss
 Excess Energy
 Excess Water consumption
 Inefficient use of labour
 Inefficient use of raw materials
 Unusable/Discarded Chemical Residues
Manage what is being Waste ?Manage what is being Waste ?
er.vs.ekbote@gmail.com
Last Words
• Know our Environmental Policy
– Identify new aspects
– Follow the guidelines / Procedures to comply with
EMP.
– Keep continuous improvement
– Keep the workplace clean & Green
– Follow safety / Instructions
– Spread this knowledge that learnt to others.
