Junk food is an informal term applied to some foods that are perceived to have little or no nutritional value (i.e. containing "empty calories"); to products with nutritional value, but also have ingredients considered unhealthy when regularly eaten; or to those considered unhealthy to consume at all. The famous microbiologist Dr. Michael F. Jacobson, director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, coined the phrase "Junk Food" in 1972 to describe unhealthy or nonnutritious food. Junk foods are typically ready-to-eat convenience foods containing high levels of saturated fats, salt, or sugar, and little or no fruit, vegetables, or dietary fiber; and are considered to have little or no health benefits. Junk food has been a part of the American society for years and now it has become an addiction for many people. Common junk foods include:     chips (crisps) candy gum, most sweet desserts, fried fast food carbonated beverages (sodas) MARKETING: Following a high profile media campaign by chef Jamie Oliver and a threat of court action from the National Heart Forum in the United Kingdom in 2006, The UK advertising regulator and competition authority launched a consultation on advertising of foods to children. The Food Standards Agency was one of many respondents. As a result, a ban on advertising during children's television programmes and programmes aimed at school aged children (5-16 years old) was announced .The ban also includes marketing using celebrities, cartoon characters and health or nutrition claims. HEALTH EFFECTS OF JUNK FOOD: Scientists and researchers have been talking about adverse effects of junk food for decades. The harmful effects which are associated with junk food eating are generally characterized as shortterm effects and long-term effects. 7
  8. 8. Short Term Impacts on Health Reduced Energy Though a person may eat a sufficient quantity of junk, they will still feel weakened since it contains little, if any, nutritional value. Reduced Concentration People who eat too much junk food, which is rich in oil and fat, may not be able to concentrate on work, they may feel drowsy, and their blood circulation may decrease. Long Term Impacts on Health  Heart Disease Eating "junk" is one of the primary causes of heart disease - Myocardial infarction being one example. This occurs when plaque is formed in the arteries that are connected to the heart. These arteries have to work extra hard to pump blood downstream, which in turn creates circulation problems. Heart fatigue and heart attack can also often be associated with it.  High Cholesterol Junk diet also creates high cholesterol which affects your liver. Continuous consumption of it may completely damage your liver, or at least disturb your metabolism. SOME OTHER HEALTH EFFECTS ARE: 1. A study by Paul Johnson and Paul Kenny at The Scripps Research Institute (2008) suggested that junk food consumption alters brain activity in a manner similar to addictive drugs like cocaine or heroin. 2. A 2007 British Journal of Nutrition study found that mothers who eat junk food during pregnancy increased the likelihood of unhealthy eating habits in their children. 3. A 2008 report suggests that mothers who eat junk food while pregnant or breast-feeding have children who are more prone to obesity. The children are also more prone to diabetes, raised cholesterol, and high blood fat. 8
  9. 9. RESEARCH DONE ON JUNK FOOD: I. II. III. A report published in the Journal of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology suggests that babies of mothers with a high-sugar and high-fat diet while pregnant are more prone to junk food themselves. According to a survey after many weeks on a junk food diet, the pleasure centers of rat brains became desensitized, requiring more food for pleasure. After the junk food was taken away and replaced with a healthy diet, the rats starved for two weeks instead of eating nutritious fare. The study was conducted on rats and suggests that "infants whose mothers eat excessive amounts of high-fat, high-sugar junk foods when pregnant or breastfeeding are likely to have a greater preference for these foods later in life." Why Junk Food And Diet Is So Appealing?  The Time Factor: Junk food addiction is so high because of its simplicity. They are easy to prepare and are very tasty. Junk foods such as potato wafers and Cheetos do not even need cooking or heating. You prefer to eat them when you watch TV. You save yourself a lot of hassles and time when you are in a hurry eating pizzas and burgers as they are served at your door step hot and ready to eat.  The Taste Factor: If time constraint is one reason that pushes you to eating junk food, great taste also, to an extent influences you to opt for junk food. But junk foods get their taste owing to lavish usage of oils, salts and/or sugar. Once you are caught in junk food addiction, you find it hard to think about the loss of nutrition junk food pushes you into. THE BEST AND WORST OF JUNK FOOD: A change in lifestyle and the commercial possibilities in preparing and marketing food stuffs have led to a boom in factory made and packaged food. These foods indicate nutrition patterns different from those in fresh or homemade food. Since all of us consume biscuits, noodles, chips, bread and other readymade foods, it is important to be aware of the highs and lows of such food. 9
  10. 10. ADVANTAGE OF JUNK FOOD: 1. It is readily available. 2. Its production and sale creates jobs and income for some people. 3. It is a good option for something new foods. DISADVANTAGE OF JUNK FOOD: 1. There is an emphasis on taste rather than nutrition. 2. Convenient foods are manufactured commercially an on large scale, and consequently are low in nutrition. 3. Unsuitable to diet plans. 4. Their energy, protein, fat and carbohydrate content, as well as their sodium and potassium content make these foods unsuitable in therapeutic diet plans requiring complex manipulation of the nutrient such as energy, protein andor electrolyte. 5. Additives like preservatives, colorants and sweetness may be harmful. 6. Readymade foods contain ingredients that are added to increase the shelf life. This ingredient may not be listed in the label and could be harmful. NEED FOR STUDY: It has several impact on society and the necessity for this study is : 1. It has many short terms impact like  Reduced Energy  Reduced Concentration 2. It also has many long term impacts like  Heart Disease  High Cholesterol 3. The children’s are targeted so that the sale of this kind of increases and this is a serious problem because from childhood children will be unhealthy. 4.   11. 11. SIGNIFICANCE OF JUNK FOOD: Junk food are that contain little or no nutrients apart from energy. These are feel-good foods like chocolates, artificially flavored aerated drinks, and crisps. If sugary drink and confectionary are consumed in large amounts, it can cause marginal malnutrition and create a thiamin deficiency. This deficiency is caused because more of this B complex vitamin is required when more energy is consumed. Sugary drinks do not contain it even in trace amounts. Persistent consumption of junk foods will lead to severe malnutrition. Young children’s have a tendency to make a meal out of these junk foods, as they taste good and therefore are addictive. Though consumption of biscuits occasionally is good , the substitution of these for meals can be harmful, as they do not form a balanced diet. SCOPE OF STUDY: Junk food covers the whole of the world because these foods are found in every part of the world and is mostly liked by the people of all age group .but our study is limited to specific part. The area of our study is Chennai city in TAMILNADU .In comparisons to the other part of the world even in Chennai there are lovers of junk food. The junk food is served in many outlets, the few outlets in our locality are:MC DONALDS KFC DOMINOS PIZZA HUT BARISTA CAFÉ COFFEE DAY (CCD) So these are the famous outlets known by the peoples. And in these places the crowd is maximum. 11

He says when we see news or read newspaper everywhere there is junk food. Junk food is mostly famous among the children’s because it is more appealing to the children’s. He says when we hear the word junk food the foods like pizzas, hamburgers; crisps etc come to our mind. he gives the proportion of pizza in two different outlet. PIZZA DOMINO'S: Half an American Hot 507 calories 17.7g fat 59.4g carbs PIZZA EXPRESS: Half an American Hot 517 calories 13.2g fat 68.6g carbs Pizzas are viewed differently, depending on where you eat them. Domino's Pizza, for example, is considered by many to be "junk food", while Pizza Express, beloved of the middle classes, is seen as healthy Italian grub . 2. .JUNK FOOD AD CRACDOWN, the junk food is increasing it popularity among children through the attractive advertisement, by using the celebrities, the free gifts etc which tempt children towards junk food. This is taken as serious issue because it affects the children & makes them to eat this kind of food. The OFCOM (OFFICE FOR COMMUNICATION).has taken steps to control the influence of the junk food. The ofcom has introduced the rating system which helps to identify the salt & fat rate of the food which is being advertised & the food with more of this is not advertised and it will not lead to any consequences. 13
  14. 14. 3. JUNK FOOD ADDICTION MAY BE REAL written by JENIFER GOODWIN. Research done on rats. The rats were made to stay on junk food diet for many days and when the junk food was taken away from rats, they went on hunger strike for days because they were tempted to the junk food. They had the rat chow only for the purpose of living but they wanted only junk food. The researchers concluded that the mind is addictive to junk like it is addictive towards heroin or cocaine like drugs. She says to written to normality one should diet for long period and it side by side reduce the body weight. 4. CRAVING FOR JUNK FOOD INHERITED, presented by the royal veterinary college researches, research was done on pregnant rats, they were made to stay on the junk food diet during their pregnancy . The rats were made to stay on diet till they give birth to their mice and till the breastfeeding time. When the mice were born they were separated in groups & realized that the craving for junk food was more than the rat chow. They concluded that the craving for junk food is inherited. But was criticized that without proper evidence the pregnant women cannot be made guilty for having junk food in their diet. 5. JUNK FOD MOM HAVE JUNK FOOD BABIES, posted by SCIENCE DAILY(mar 24,2011). The research was done on rats. The pregnant rats were made to stay on junk food diet .when the mice were born they were given a choice between the rat chow and junk food. They had preference for junk food. This research will help the pregnant women to know what is good for their health and the junk food side effects. And it is concluded that the mothers who eat excessive of junk food have preference for junk food in the later life. 6. MOMS EAT JUNK FOOD, KIDS GET FAT, given by WEBMD. Mothers who eat junk food during pregnancy have obesity-prone children, rat studies suggest. This studies suggest that the rats mice who ever never tasted the junk food still have a desire 4 it because may be their mother have eaten that .this is said that the junk food kids grow fatter than the normal kids. On the other hand, Cook says, junk food is made to have tastes and textures that appeal to children. And it's heavily advertised, which also affects a child's preferences. But it is unethical to feed pregnant women with junk food. 14
  15. 15. 7. FOOD STANDARDS AGENCY BOARD responds to ofcom regarding the broadcast of the advertisement on Thursday 15june 2006. The Board agrees that any restrictions must protect children up to the age of 15 years old. The Board supports a pre-9pm watershed on advertisements for products high in fat, salt or sugar, which would offer a practical means of extending protection. The Board does not support any options that would restrict advertising of all foods, including foods such as fruit and vegetables, which would conflict with the promotion of healthy eating. 'Children are targeted every day with messages that promote foods that are high in fat, salt or sugar, and the Hastings Review clearly showed that this does have an influence on children's food choices. 15

  17. 17. Junk food contains little or zero nutritious value to the diet to much of unnecessary and fat which are useless and harmful to human health. Junk foods are typically ready to eat convenient food containing high level of saturated fats, salt or sugar and little or no fruits and vegetables, or dietary fibers and are considered to have little or no health benefit. The marketing for junk food is done on large scale and it is consumed in all over the world by all the age groups. Since it is unhealthy we should take necessary steps in solving it and this can be done with the help of data collection. DATA COLLECTION Collection of statistical data is the fundamental basis for all the statistical analysis. Before collecting statistical data one should clearly define       The purpose of inquiry The source of information Scope of inquiry The degree of accuracy Methods of collecting data The unit of data collection 1. PURPOSE OF INQUIRY: Statistical data are collected to draw desired conclusions based on the data. This information can also be useful for some other survey. 2. SCOPE OF INQUIRY: For any investigation of a statistical problem, one has to decide the geographical area to be covered, the field of inquiry to which it is to be confined. 3. SOURCES OF INFORMATION: In any statistical inquiry the statistical data can be collected by conducting survey. It can be  PRIMARY DATA –the statistical data can be collected by conducting a survey ,in this case the data collected can be called as primary data 17

THE DEGREE OF ACCURACY: Absolute accuracy is neither possible nor desirable in a statistical inquiry. Statistical inquiry involves large collection of data, a reasonable standard of accuracy is sufficient. 5. STATISTICAL UNIT: Statistical data cannot be presented without a unit. The unit should be simple and unambiguous. it should be stable and uniform. The nature of unit depends upon the purpose of inquiry. PRIMARY DATA COLLECECTION The data can be conducted by survey and that data is known as primary data. The collection of primary data is a time and money consuming process and it is used only by the organized government body. The primary data can be collected by the following method:     Direct personal investigation Indirect oral investigation Information through correspondents By sending the questionnaires by mail By sending schedules to be filled by enumerators The type or method used in our project is direct investigation method. DIRECT INVESTIGATION METHOD: The investigator has to meet the individual personally to get information. it is essential that the investigator should be tactful in getting the information from individual.   19. 19. reliable and accurate. This is applicable only when the field of inquiry is limited it involves large amount of time and money. STATISTICAL METHOD USED BAR DIAGRAM:A bar chart or bar graph is a chart with rectangular bars with lengths proportional to the values that they represent. The bars can be plotted vertically or horizontally. A graph very similar to histogram is the bar diagram. Bar charts are always used for qualitative and categorical data, although they can be used quite effectively with quantitative data. It represents the number of observation with that score or in that category in X-axis and Y-axis. COMPONENTS BAR DIAGRAM: Sub-divided or component bar chart is used to represent data in which the total magnitude is divided into different or components. In this diagram, first we make simple bars for each class taking total magnitude in that class and then divide these simple bars into parts in the ratio of various components. This type of diagram shows the variation in different components within each class as well as between different classes. Sub-divided bar diagram is also known as component bar chart or staked chart. PIE DIAGRAM: A pie chart (or a circle graph) is a circular chart divided into sectors, illustrating proportion. Pie chart, the arc length of each sector (and consequently its central angle and area), is proportional to the quantity it represents. When angles are measured with 1 turn as unit then a number of percent is identified with the same number of centaurs. Together, the sectors create a full disk. It is named for its resemblance to a pie which has been sliced. The earliest known pie chart is generally credited to William Playfair's Statistical Breviary of 1801. 19

However, it has been criticized and some recommend avoiding it, pointing out in particular that it is difficult to compare different sections of a given pie chart, or to compare data across different pie charts. Pie charts can be an effective way of displaying information in some cases, in particular if the intent is to compare the size of a slice with the whole pie, rather than comparing the slices among them Pie charts work particularly well when the slices represent 25 to 50% of the data, but in general, other plots such as the bar chart or the dot plot, or nongraphical methods such as tables, may be more adapted for representing certain information. It also shows the frequency within certain groups of information.   43. 43. FINDINGS: Through the analysis and interpretation we conclude the following: 1. Majority of (23%) respondents prefer burger when compared with other types of junk food. 2. Majority of (50%) respondents think that prices of junk food are reasonable. 3. Majority of (66%) respondents are in view that junk food has no impact on health. 4. Majority of (54%) respondents think that consumption of junk food has increased in Tamilnadu. 5. The age group which consumes more junk food is 13-19 years according to (48%) of respondents. 6. Majority of (72%) respondents are of the view that the side effect of junk food is obesity. 7. The junk food is preferred more than the traditional food by majority of (70%) respondents. 8. Majority of (36%) respondents prefer KFC as their favorite outlet. 9. The preference of junk food over traditional food is more according to (68%) of the respondents. 10. Majority of (80%) respondents think that traditional food is important for healthy life. RECOMMENDATION: From the survey we can find out that the impact of junk food on society is quite high, we have to stop this or else it will be a great difficulty to maintain a good health. 1. We should substitute the junk food by the tasty food made at home. Junk food made at home is less harmful to health. 2. if the price of junk food is much expensive then people will hesitate to buy it this can reduce the consumption of junk food. 3. The junk food has great impact on health because it is harmful to health. If we consume it by giving time gap then it can have no impact on health. 5. now-a-days small kids are affected with the obesity which can be dangerous for their growth. This should be done by banning the junk food in schools. 6. The people should be given knowledge about healthy food so that this food can be stopped. 43
  44. 44. Junk Food- Ban In Schools (ARCTICLE) At the moment there is a restriction on junk food in schools. For example vending machines in your school have changed from chocolate bars and crisps to nutri-grain bars and drinks. Junk food is not served as frequently and you may feel disappointed about this. The ban is a good thing since statistics show by the middle of the century, 2050, two-thirds of children will be overweight or obese if nothing is done. Since action is being taken now by the ban and now we have a second chance to change for the better. We know that a healthy body is very important and an unhealthy diet results in an unhealthy body. Foods eaten with a high factor of salt and fat too much can cause obesity. You have only yourself to blame. As the saying goes you are what you eat. Even though salt is essential for our lives excess amounts found in junk food can cause high blood pressure. And it doesn’t stop there since obesity. Avoiding Junk Food To help your kids avoid junk food, you should encourage them to eat healthy snacks and more of the following foods that are usually considered to be a part of a healthy diet: foods that are low in fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol high-fiber foods, including whole-grain foods, vegetables and fruits foods that have only a moderate amount of sugar and salt calcium-rich foods, to meet a child's daily calcium requirements iron-rich foods, to meet a child's daily requirements for iron You don't have to avoid all junk food all of the time though if you don't want to do so. The food pyramid even allows for some discretionary calories that we can all use to eat some "luxury foods," including those with fat or added sugar. Keep in mind that most people's allowance of discretionary calories is very small, about 130 calories for a 5 year old and 290 calories for a 10 year old. People often overdo it -- getting too many calories each day. The key to eating these junk foods is moderation. So only let your kids eat them occasionally. And when you do, get them small portions (small fries or kiddie-sized milk shake, for example). 44

  46. 46. DIFFERENCE BETWEEN JUNK FOOD AND HEALTHY FOOD S.NO 1. JUNK FOOD Junk foods have mile long ingredient list, with names you can hardly pronounce. The best foods have no ingredient list. HEALTHY FOOD Healthy foods are simply ones that are as close as possible to what God intended, foods with their nutrients intact, and a minimum of toxins. Junk food is not prepared under the vision of our eyes. Healthy food keeps our body and brain strong and active. Junk food we might don't known that they serve is fresh or not. Healthy food is served at home freshly. 2. 3. WHEN IS IT HEALTHY TO EAT FAST FOOD? The short answer is: rarely. Typically, fast food is low in nutrition and high in trans fat, saturated fat, sodium, and calories. Some examples:  One sack of hash bites or potato snackers from White Castle, for example, contains 10 grams of very unhealthy Tran’s fat. The American Heart Association recommends we consume less than 2 grams of Tran’s fat per day.
