May “marks” my one year anniversary as the Family and MWR Director and to be frank, I cannot believe how the time has come and gone so quickly! I am really happy to be leading such a great bunch of professionals that provide you with such great Programs and Services… they truly go the extra mile to give you “a-little-bit-of- home!” As some of you know, we hosted a visit from the internationally acclaimed and occasionally berated “Celebrity Chef Mike” at the Gateway Club last month, where he personally trained eleven Junior Pizza Chefs. These future gastronomists, between the ages of four and thirteen, toured the kitchen, learned and demonstrated proper culinary hygiene, food science and mise-en place (or in other words proper organizing and arranging of ingredients and items). They then prepared pizza dough from scratch, added ingredients of their choice and cooked their own Italian masterpieces! The Gateway Club will host more of these events in the coming weeks. Stop by and visit the Manager, Ms. O’Connor, about future dates and times. My inside information has it that since May 15th is National Chocolate Chip Day; you can probably guess what we will make next!! Some other special days of note for the month are: May 8th - V-E Day (WW II) May 18th - Mother’s Day, (began in 1908) May 19th - Armed Forces Day (began in 1950) May 26th - Memorial Day (began in 1865) May 26th is also the birthday of Dr. Sally Ride, the first U.S. Woman in space. She was also inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame and the Astronaut Hall of Fame. So with all that said, I wish you a great month of May. Don’t forget, we have the pool opening on May 24th and another Comedy show this month, plus Mother’s Day Specials and much, much more, so peruse the “In the Zone Magazine” and be-in-the-know!!! See you out and about!!! “Serving Those Who Serve” From your Family and MWR Director Jammie G. Hawkins Director, Family and MWR 26 O U T D O O R P O O L CASEY OPEN MAY 24! 3IN THE ZONE

  14. 14. Larissa Krenzer Larry O. Butler (Director) Sports, Fitness AquaticsStory by Get ready Soldiers and other members of the Area l community, summer is here, and that means fun in the sun at the Camp Casey outdoor ‘Splish Splash’ Swimming Pool and Water Park. It’s time for swimming trunks and bathing suits and cool pool fun all summer long! It all begins at the official season opening ceremony on May 24th. “This is the 4th year since the outdoor pool was renovated,” says Larry Butler, Director of Sports, Fitness and Aquatics for Area 1. “Since then we’ve been committed to making sure that Soldiers, their families and other authorized members of the Area 1 community enjoy their summer days by the pool, and of course we always put safety first,” Butler says. The outdoor water park features an adult pool with diving boards and two water slides that are always popular with young and old swimmers alike. Additionally there are picnic tables and chairs with umbrellas surrounding the entire area for those who just want to sit and relax by the pool. What about the kids? They’re covered too! There is a large wading pool for children with two fountains for kids to safely walk under and enjoy. Similarly there’s a really cool sprinkler that sprays water for kids to enjoy while soaking up the sun. Parents with younger children can also enjoy the water park in the wading pool, which has different depths to accommodate youngsters of all ages. “During the renovation process we wanted to make sure that there would be something for everyone,” affirms Butler, who went on to say again that safety has always been and will continue to be of the highest priority. “We’ll have seven lifeguards on duty whenever the pool is open. Every lifeguard is certified and will closely monitor pool activity at all times. Every pool employee and lifeguard knows how important safety is,” Butler says. 15. 15. Last summer over 50,000 people used the pool, a testament to the popularity of the water park both during the week and on weekends. “Attendance has always been good over the years, but once the renovation project was completed and the slide installed, attendance really increased. “Families really enjoy using the water park and the increased attendance clearly shows that. We’re proud of this facility and the team of professionals we have onboard who maintain everything and make sure this is a fun and safe place to be during the long, hot summer days,” Butler says. This season visitors will be able to enjoy the pool park from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. The facility will be closed on Mondays unless Monday is a Holiday, in which case it will be closed Tuesday that week. Can’t wait to get in all the fun the Casey outdoor pool and park have to offer? Then join the season re-opening celebration, open to all members of the Area 1 Community, on Saturday May 24th! The event will splash in at 11 a.m. and will continue until 4 that afternoon. Enjoy open swimming, opening remarks, contests provided by the BOSS program, live entertainment and give- a-ways including seasonal passes for both single Soldiers and families. “The water park is just one of the many outstanding Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation programs available to our patrons this summer,” Butler says. “We hope everyone takes advantage of all Area l FMWR facilities, programs and activities. We’re here for them!” In order to continue operating and maintaining the best possible outdoor pool facilities in Area 1, new user fees have been established beginning with the 2014 swimming pool season. To access the pool, Soldiers and family members will need either a daily pass or a seasonal ticket, both available for a nominal fee. Day passes for adults with a Military or Department of Defense (DOD) Identification card will be $2. For non-DOD ID holders the daily pass will cost $10 and will need to be accompanied by a Military member or DOD ID card holder. For frequent pool users, seasonal passes are available for $40 per person or $75 per family (seasonal passes are only available for Military and US DOD ID card holders). Passes are available at the Hanson Fitness Center. Children 3 and under are admitted free, but must be accompanied by a paying adult. For more information, call 730-3220. 21. 21. CW3 Gerald Kuruc Volunteer of the Month USAG Red Cloud, Casey and Area I CW3 Kuruc has been an active volunteer at the Camp Casey USO since December of 2012, beginning his volunteer service shortly after arriving in Korea in September. Since then, he has volunteered over 300 hours with the USO, helping out with countless programs and events, as well as day-to-day center operations. Last year, CW3 Kuruc noticed that some Soldiers would sit at the picnic tables outside the USO center on weekends just to pick up the Wi-Fi signal, since the USO is closed on Sundays. He volunteered to spend his Sunday afternoons at the USO to support his fellow Soldiers. His continued commitment to volunteer service has made him one of our community’s most reliable volunteers. CW3 Kuruc is an exceptional volunteer, always offering to help out and going above and beyond what is expected of volunteers. In addition to running the center on Sundays, he also regularly brings leftover food from his church luncheon to share with Soldiers at the center. He also has been known to simply drop by the USO center to help at the front desk, take out trash, and assist the USO staff volunteers in any way. CW3 Kuruc is an indispensable part of the USO Casey team. His volunteer service is truly appreciated. He is always eager to help and offers his time freely whenever asked. Our community would not be able to offer the same quality of services and programs without his selfless efforts. What is an Army wife? An Army wife is mostly girl, though there are times, when her husband is away and she is mowing the lawn that she begins to suspect she is also BOY. She usually comes in three sizes: petite, plump - and pregnant. During the early years of her marriage it is often hard to determine which size is her normal one. She has babies all over the world, and she measures time in terms of places, as other women do in years. It was at Leavenworth that we all had the mumps. In Tokyo, Don was promoted ... At least one of her babies is born, or one transfer is accomplished, while she is alone, causing her to suspect a secret pact between her husband and the Army, which provides for a man to be overseas or on temporary duty at these times. An Army wife is international. She may be an Iowa farm girl, a French mademoiselle, a Japanese doll, or an ex- Army nurse. When discussing their Army problems, they speak the same language. She can be a great actress. Watching her children's heartbreak at transfer time, she gives an Academy Award performance: Arizona is going to be such fun! I hear they have Indian reservations, and tarantulas, and RATTLESNAKES ... But her heart is breaking with theirs, and she wonders if this Army life is worth the sacrifice. One day later, en route to the new assignment and filled with a spirit of adventure, she knows it is. That is, if the baby hasn't come down with a virus, or the twins with the measles. An ideal Army wife has the patience of an angel, the flexibility of putty, the wisdom of a scholar, and the stamina of a horse. If she dislikes money, it helps. She loves to gripe. (Why shouldn't the commissary bag my groceries like the supermarkets?) She lets off steam, and then goes back to bagging them again. She is sentimental, carrying her memories with her in an old footlocker. She often cries at parades, without knowing why. She is a dreamer: We'll never move again! an optimist: The next place will be better! a realist: Oh, well, as long as we're together. You might say she is a bigamist - sharing her husband with a demanding other entity called Duty. When Duty calls, she becomes the number 2 wife, and until she accepts this fact her life can be miserable. She is many persons. She is the tired traveler coming down the gangplank with a smile on her lips, love in her eyes, and a new baby in her arms. She is the general's wife smiling in a reception line until her cheeks ache. She is the foreign bride in a strange American world. She is, above all, a woman who married a soldier who offered her the permanence of a gypsy, the miseries of loneliness, the frustrations of conformity - and the security of love. Sitting among her packing boxes, with children squabbling nearby, she is sometimes willing to chuck it all - until she hears the firm step and cheerful voice of that lug who gave her all this. And then she is happy to be ... HIS Army wife. http://sill-www.army.mil/428thfa/frg/funideas/What%20 is%20an%20Army%20Wife.pdf Originally titled, What is an Army Wife?, and taken from the link above. 41IN THE ZONE40 USAG Red Cloud - Casey and Area I Family and MWR Magazine

  27. 27. Daeji galbi is Korea's finest grilled spareribs (usually pork) that are succulent in taste as well as appealing to the eyes. Daeji galbi is much close to barbecued, L.A. style, galbi ribs which are crisply grilled to perfection with its tenderloins and bones still attached. However, daeji galbi tends to be quite spicy in taste as gochujang (red chili pepper paste) is added to the base of this marinade sauce. To complement this meal, most restaurants serve a wonderful variety of traditional side courses (banchan) consisting of mostly vegetables in various sauces, marinades and broths. A traditional side dish such as kimchi and/or kkaktugi are usually served while eating this meal. Daeji galbi is usually cooked at tables by waiter or waitress who wanders from grill to grill, turning the meat over and letting you know when the meat is ready. Korean 101: Daeji means pork in Korean and galbi is the word for spareribs, therefore, it translates into pork spareribs. • 5 lbs spareribs (pork) • 1 (1 inch) piece ginger root, minced • 2 onions (pureed) • 4 tbsp minced garlic • 1 cup gochujang • 4 tbsp sugar • 2 tbsp soy sauce • 3 tbsp sesame oil • 1 tsp black pepper 1. If ribs are not separated, separate by cutting meat between the bones. Place in a large bowl. 2. Purée onions in a blender as it is easier to marinade and spread on ribs. 3. Combine all ingredients except pork ribs. 4. Once ingredients are all mixed consistently, rub marinade generously over meat. 5. Cover and refrigerate 5 hours or preferably overnight. 6. Grill ribs over medium-high heat until done, about 8-10 minutes per side. 7. If cooked in an oven, preheat to 350º. Spray cooking spray onto a baking sheet and place the ribs on it. Cook for 1 hour and 45 minutes or until the meat is so soft that it falls off the bone.
