United pac press statement mis dioagasis at public hospitals

  1. 1. Email: unitepacstlucia@gm ail.com                     FOR  IMMEDIATE  RELEASE         UNITED  PAC  CALLS  ON  TWO  MINISTERS  TO  ANSWER  TO  CRITICAL  ISSUES           Castries – Saint Lucia – October 13, 2013 – United PAC understands that over the last few months, weeks and days a number of people have died as a result of contracting Dengue and Leptospirosis, however, in both instances, they have been misdiagnosed only to be treated for various forms of cancer at our public health institutions. United PAC is aware that both Dengue Fever and Leptospirosis can lead to death, however, they are two treatable diseases if diagnosed early and accurately. Why then has the Minister with responsibility for Health and Wellness, Hon. Alvina Reynolds, not made it a priority to meet with the staff that she manages to address those rising issues? How many more Saint Lucians must succumb to these two illnesses before the Minister ensures that staff at the island’s public health institutions follow correct diagnosing protocol? As concerned citizens, we are requesting that the Minister put systems in place to evaluate the technical capacity of the medical doctors and nurses at our public health institutions and create an alert system so that both medical institutions and the nation at large can be more vigilant against misdiagnosis and personal care.   Follow  us  on:  www.twitter.com/uwpunited  and  www.youtube.com/uwpunitedpac
  2. 2. All of these critical developments within the public health care system while another Minister, in the person of Mr. Victor LaCorbiniere, makes sweeping and authoritative pronouncement that the Forensic Laboratory is well equipped and very well staffed. Such statements largely imply that all is well; and if this is the case, we therefore ask that Minister LaCorbiniere release the following information so the public concerns about wide spread murder and mayhem is dispelled. • The number of sexual assault cases submitted to the laboratory for examinations for each of the years 2010 to 2012; the number of cases completed and hence the case backlog quantity. • The number of homicide cases submitted to the laboratory for examinations for each of the years 2010 to 2012; the number of cases completed and hence the case backlog quantity. • Any determinations as to the projected number of departmental staff actually required to efficiently handle normal case workloads, back logs and information as it relates to address that. Progress regarding requirements for accreditation and extent of accomplishment thus far. • Technology available to assist technicians in obtaining critical information about cases being investigated. For too long Saint Lucians have to sit and listen to words that carry no weight from this Government. These issues are very close to the heart of the people and we humbly await a favorable response followed by the appropriate action.
