  1. 1. Holistic development of our leaders of tomorrow Email: unitedyouthuwp@gmail.com FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE UNITED YOUTH OBSERVES UNIVERSAL CHILDREN’S DAY Castries, Saint Lucia – Wednesday November 20th 2013 – Today, United Youth joins with the rest of the World to celebrate and recognize the United Nations’ (UN) Universal Children’s Day under the theme ‘STOP THE VIOLENCE AGAINST CHILDREN.’ Universal Children’s Day is celebrated on the 20th of November each year to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and improving children's welfare. In November of 2012, statistics from the Division of Human Services of the Ministry of Health, Wellness, Human Services and Gender Relations show that in Saint Lucia, between 2009 and 2011, there were 725 reported cases of child abuse on the island, 239 of these cases involved male victims. In 2009, the total number of reported cases were 232. This number rose in 2011 to 254. In another report published in the summer of 2012, PROSAF (Surviving Sexual Abuse in the Caribbean) in assisting with a qualitative study, found that an overwhelming majority of the adults who partook in the study had experienced child sexual abuse. Accurate statistics on the prevalence of child and adolescent sexual abuse are difficult to collect because of underreporting. We as a Country, as a people, have a duty to protect our children from pedophiles and other sexual predators. Our children also face the issue of bullying. In 2007, in a survey conducted, 25.1% of the children surveyed stated that they had been bullied in the past thirty (30) days. We call on teachers and parents to be vigilant, to not ignore our children’s pleas for help and also seek to correct and discourage children who partake in bullying. We sympathize with Molly Allen and her 10 year old daughter who has alleged that her daughter has been the victim of bullying for an extended period of time by the son of the woman who attacked her on October 25th 2013. We ask that the Minister of Education acts swiftly in resolving the issues under its purview and we pray for the speedy recovery of the young child. We all have a duty to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our Nation’s children. Let us do so.
