How does your media product represent particular social groups?
My Audience My media product is designed to catch the eye of somebody like this. They’re wearing a low cut top, black skinny jeans, a cardigan and a standard belt. You would find all of these items of clothing at River Island, Topman, Bank, and Republic. This is the social group that I wanted to capture (indie), because the people that wear this type of clothing listen to the type of music my magazine was covering such as ‘The Wombats’ and ‘Foster The People’ and go to festivals to see live music.
How does my product communicate with my audience?My media product communicates with my audience because it is relative to them.Nobody is going to buy a magazine that has no point of interest for them whatsoever,hence my product is based around my target audience’s interest in clothing and music.I’ve used interviews and stories regarding famous bands that my target audiencewould be very interested in, as some would want to emulate their lifestyle and capturetheir imagination. I feel that by using competitions in my magazine, it would increasemy target audience with the promise of money and possibly fame.My title is a play on the word ‘Indie’ and it came out as ‘Indeep’. I feel that by havingthe word ‘deep’ in my title it is encouraging people to become more involved in theindie culture.By using young models throughout my magazine it emphasises the fact that I’m tryingto capture a youthful audience who have vitality and who don’t want to be a part ofthe mainstream culture.
How does my magazine make my audience look?My magazine is creating ayouthful image, whilst at thesame time it is one that isn’tmainstream. In todays societybeing young can be very stressfuland indie music can create a ‘laidback’ image and a form ofescapism.By using the image of a guitar onmy front cover it emphasises howmusic can create relaxation. Theaudience would want to be partof this relaxed environment, asindie music encourages asociable, chilled out mood.
