  3. 3. From ancient history and heritage science to modern dance and digital content. Research into these subjects helps us to interpret our experiences, probe our identities, interrogate our cultural assumptions and understand our historical, social, economic and political context. It adds to the economic success of the UK, through its contributions to the knowledge economy and innovation agenda. The research we fund can lead to improvements in social and intellectual capital, community identity, learning skills, technological evolution and the quality of life of the nation Arts and Humanities Research Council
  4. 4. Case Study Delivering traditional Scottish Music lessons online …… • Interface used to identify expertise at Edinburgh Napier • Assistance with online eCommerce facilities, advanced DVD authoring techniques, digital audiovisual editing and creating learning communities • Academic – connections with Skye, keen interest in traditional Scottish music + deep knowledge of Gaelic culture “Having visited several universities, we found Napier had the specific expertise in the area we needed. They were also personally interested in the music, which was important”. Christine Martin, Founder of Tiagh na Teud Taigh na Teud
  5. 5. Case Study Take a Ferry and Learn ………… • Scottish Funding Council feasibility study • The Centre for Nordic Studies, Orkney College, UHI • Development of a DVD of the heritage of Orkney for enhanced visitor experience. • Looking at further collaborative funding opportunities “Our involvement with this project has shown that travelling by ferry can also be a cultural learning experience. We are keenly looking forward to further developments on this theme.” David Sawkins Ferry Services Manager, Orkney Ferries
  6. 6. Case Study Nessie in 3D ………… • Social Enterprise – adults with learning difficulties / social deprivation • Project with Inverness College, UHI • Creation of a new 3D soap – Soap mould • Student Involvement in packaging design “We were delighted when HI Links introduced us to Inverness College, UHI. We’d had an idea to create a new 3D ‘Nessie’ shaped soap but had no idea how to go about it! Unknown to us, on our doorstep, Inverness College had just the expertise and facilities we needed. They have successfully created a bespoke mould for our soap. We hope this will be the start of an ongoing relationship between us working on similar projects. “ Lucy Morrison, Project Manager, Ness Soaps
