Bafna Vocational Training Centre Udaipur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UCCI) is an apex body of trade, industry, mining, education and tourism in Southern Rajasthan. It has more than 500 direct members and more than 3000 indirect members (members of affiliated chambers and associations of this region). UCCI also operates a hazardous waste management facility and landfill site for Rajasthan which is used by more than 1000 members. UCCI represents an investment of approximately Rs. 57,000 crore by its member industries. UCCI values quality, sustainability and innovation. UCCI has played an important role in catalysing industrial development in Southern Rajasthan. As a trade body, it understands the needs of business in the region. It conveys these needs to government, works with them to further develop industry in South Rajasthan. On the other hand, it helps its members implement new practices and government reforms. UCCI has a robust system of industrial grievance redressal in place. From time to time, UCCI organises seminars, workshops, industrial visits and foreign delegations for the benefit of industry. In the years to come, UCCIs Vision in to develop Udaipur as a hub for skill development in South Rajasthan and promote the Region as an investment destination with Business Prospects in Heritage, Nature and Health, Tourism, Mining, Education, Information, Hardware Technology and Pharmaceuticals. We shall also play an active role in channelizing and supporting the CSR activities of our corporate members for the development of the region. i
  3. 3. ii Broadening Horizons This year was my second term as the President of UCCI. Often it is said that the second term is usually more relaxed than the first but for me it was more demanding. On one hand we had to stabilise all the projects that we had started in my first term and on the other hand we had to expand the role of the Chamber and its reach among the business community across the world. We also conceptualised more new projects that brought repute to the Chamber. The Vocational Training Center continued on its success and with the hard work of CA Ravish Mandawat and CA Devashish Kogata, it successfully completed many batches of the GST Skilled Accountants program, besides running numerous workshops and short term training programmes for Tally, MS Excel and Stock Markets. To extend the reach of our VTC among the youth, we announced our affiliation service for the skill development centers which want to run industry relevant courses. Arham Academy became the first center was given affiliation under this plan. To extend the initiative of skill development, we initiated the construction of a new wing on the second floor. This facility is envisioned as a self sufficient skill development facility which will invite different faculties relevant to the industry. The construction is nearing completion with the very generous support from the Mewar Polytex Group. The new wing will be named after Past President Shri B H Bapna, Chairman of Mewar Polytex who came forward to sponsor the construction. I can’t thank him enough for his great contribution to UCCI all these years. Apart from the two significant developments in the scale up UCCI Vocational Training Center, our team has been active in reaching out to the various Universities and Colleges in and around Udaipur. We have organised collaborative workshop at Janardhan Rai Nagar Vidyapeeth University and trained their staff in our GST Skilled Accountants programme. We also conducted a national conference on management with the institution. To expand UCCI’s reach in the academia, our Office Bearers and Executives represented the Chamber at various events of MLSU, Pacific University, JRNVU and Singhania University as guests. We also built a good relationship with IIM Udaipur. The 9 month program for family businesses was successfully completed in collaboration with IIM and we also helped in finding sponsors for their annual event. Throughout the year various faculties from IIM and other premium B schools of the country visited UCCI and delivered sessions in the program. With the support of so many academic institutions in Udaipur we also successfully conducted a job fair in January 2019 which saw over 470 registered participants as job seekers and over 20 well known companies including Hindustan Zinc, Secure Meters, Pyrotech, Mewar Polytex and Indira IVF came to recruit. Information Technology companies like ArcGate and Fusion gave appointment to a large number of candidates. Quite few manufacturing companies also got a fair number of candidates for various positions in their companies. This year we also came to a happy conclusion that 99% of our members had successfully transitioned to GST. I must thank the GST department for their constant support in conducting so many workshops and seminars within a year that no one was left out. Hence we made way for programs which covered
  4. 4. other areas such as exports and customs, MSME matters, skill development, industrial safety and so forth. We experienced a change in government this year at the state level and we had to re-adjust with the new officials and incoming ministers. As a part of the the new government's 100 day plan, we facilitated District Industries Centre and Department of Factories and Boilers Inspection to conduct their district level seminars. This event received tremendous reception and we have to to ensure that such events continue to be organised at UCCI. This year we also rejuvenated the Udaipur Industrial Waste Management and Research Centre which is the Trust that oversees the work of the hazardous waste facility in Gudli village. As a part of its objectives we conducted a state level seminar on hazardous waste management which Dr B Sengupta. The activities of the UIWM&RC trust were greatly supported by member secretary Sri CSR Mehta who gave his valuable time and effort towards streamlining the processes. You also helped complete the tedious task of updating the tripartite agreement between Trust, UCCI and Ramky Enviro Engineers and the Trust deed. This is something that was pending from a long time. In terms of sponsorships we broke many records this year. In the last financial year we got total pledges worth Rs. 1,20,00,000 from industries namely Ramky Enviro Engineers Limited, Mewar Polytex, JK Tyre Industries Limited, Gurpreet group of Industries, Indira IVF, Wonder Cement and Arihant Tiles & Marbles. This is been an exemplary achievement in the history of the chamber and has helped expedite some of our projects. The Environment Park development and maintenance has got so much support from this. Also our skill development centre construction was made possible due to the generosity of our members. I am also very happy to report that with the initiative of ArcGate, the renovation of recreation park in the IT park area was also completed and was inaugurated by Shri Raghupati Singhania this year. In 2018-19, UCCI went above and beyond to interact with organisations from across the country and the world. Delegation from UCCI visited Gandhinagar on invitation from Chief Secretary of Gujarat Government and Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry to attend a Global Conclave of International Chambers. Over 70 association bodies and Chambers of Commerce participated at the conclave and UCCI delegation members interacted with many of them to explore future potential. This year we were also visited by representatives from Turkish Indian Chamber of Commerce, diplomats from US embassy and many teams from various national and international organisations. This goes as far as to say that time has now come for UCCI to broaden its horizon. In past one year we have also made excellent relations with other national level association bodies such as PhD chamber, Assocham, CII, FICCI and FIEO. We also co-organised events with all of them. Our efforts towards the the smart City development has also continued with our involvement in the IHUWASH project. Last year I was invited to Delhi for national WASH conference. I hope the future presidents will continue with this. One very critical aspect of the Chamber’s growth is the digitisation of its processes. It was a proud moment for UCCI when we became the first Chamber in the world to issue digital certificate of origin. It was a daunting task to popularize the concept amongst the customs departments across the world to start accepting the certificate of origin. We took the risk and eventually managed to resolve the issues which came with it. UCCI’s web portal has become self sufficient platform through which 90% of the Chamber’s activities can be managed. Even the entire award application submission process for Excellence Awards has been digitised this year. By implementing the ISMS 27000 for information security standards, we have tried to further make it robust. All it would need in future is regular updates and maintenance. After the AGM last year, we had constituted the new executive committee and sub committees with hope those who are given responsibilities will strive to achieve the goals of this Chamber. To articulate that further, we are in the process of finalising a ‘Code of Conduct’ for all stakeholders of the Chamber. I must thank our Patron Shri Arvind Singhal for his constant support and guidance. His sub-committee has taken great care in drafting the code of conduct which once finalised will become a key document alongside the memorandum of association. We have also come out with a ‘Standard Operating Procedure’ for sub committees. This document will provide guidelines for future sub committee members and the Chairpersons on various aspects of managing the activities. The Executive Members of this year volunteered for a lot of great activities. When Excellence Awards sub- committee Chairperson Smt. Nandita Singhal asked the executive committee to support the awards, 10 Executive Members came forward to promote the awards in different districts. They visited industries and associations in Bhilwara, Kota, Dungarpur, Sirohi and many other districts to represent UCCI and asked the industries to participate in the awards. Various sub- committee Chairpersons planned and organised their events throughout the year. This is a great trend and with time all the committees should become more active and participatory. It is needless to say that the foundation day and the iii
  5. 5. UCCI Excellence Awards this year was a great event. It was made possible by the tenacity and hard work of Smt. Nandita Singhal, who I must thank from the core of my heart. It was further made grand by the fact that the Chief Guest was Ms. Shobana Kamineni, Vice Chairman of Apollo Hospitals and Life Time Achievement award winner this year was Shri Raghupati Singhania, Chairman of JK Tyre and Industries Ltd. We were greatly privileged to be in the presence of two world renowned business tycoons like Smt. Kamineni and Shri. Singhania. This year the foundation day was organised under the theme of improving businesses by involvement of women in all levels of management. I must especially thank Smt. Neelima Kala under whose Chairpersonship the Diwali Sneh Milan event was successfully conducted last year. The event saw a participation more than 600 attendees. It was a great gala event highlighted by special fire dance performance by Russian artist. Like last year, this year too, exemplary journalists and media outlets were recognized for their work. The media awards are becoming more valuable with each passing year. I would hope for the future Presidents to take this segment to a greater height. I am sure that this year’s Diwali Sneh Milan will be remembered for a long time. I also thank Smt. Haseena Chakkiwala who has been active as Chairperson for Women's Empowerment sub committee. With their efforts some excellent programs were conducted throughout the year. The building and renovation sub-committee under the Chairmanship of Past President Shri Mahendra Taya did an exceptional work in the past year. Since the foundation stones were laid last year to initiate the renovation of Secretariat building and construction of of the skill development wing, Shri Taya has been personally involved with the project without which this work could not have been completed within the time frame. I should thank architect Shri Abhinav Mantri who has rendered his expertise to this project. Past President Shri B H Bapna, who has generously contributed towards the funding of the construction of the skill development centre, has also taken out his valuable time to visit the Chamber frequently to review the progress of the work. The Chamber now has a new entrance and porch. The construction of the skill development wing is almost complete and we will have an elevator installed soon. I should also thank Smt. Nandita Singhal for her design support towards the renovation of the lobby area. This renovation activity is financially supported by Shri Gurpreet Singh Soni. It was a proud moment for our Chamber to unfurl 30 feet by 20 feet national flag on a hundred and 115 feet flag mast in the J.K. Tyre Environment Park. This is a kind of achievement which will inspire many future Presidents to think beyond our regional limitations. This flag mast represents UCCI's commitment towards excellence and nationalistic goals to become an economic superpower. I should thank Shri Raghupati Singhnia and Shri Anil Mishra of J.K. Tyre and Industries Ltd. for financially supporting this project. All legal front, the Chamber fought some battles. The members of the legal sub-committee under the the guidance of its Chairman Shri Anil Mishra took up on themselves to defend the Chamber’s interest on this aspect. There are some significant cases currently underway in High Court and the Supreme Court, the judgements of which will prove very important for the industry in the near future. One such case is the service tax on mining royalty, which is currently pending in the Supreme Court and Past President Shri M.L. Lunawath is looking after the matter. I hope these cases soon come to favourable conclusion with the efforts of the chamber. It is true that no endeavour can be successful without the support of a team. I am privileged to have Shri Ashish Chhabra as Sr. Vice President, Dr. Anshu Kothari as Vice President, Shri Kezar Ali as Hony. General Secretary, Shri Jatin Nagori as Hony. Treasurer and Immediate Past President Shri V.P. Rathi. This great team of Office Bearers has worked really hard to bring the ideas to reality. Also I must thank the secretarial staff led by Chief Operating Officer Shri Koustubh Bhattacharya for their constant support. With this I bring my message to a close. I am extremely fortunate to have been guided by the Patron and all the Past Presidents of the Chamber during my two years as the President of UCCI. It has been really very delightful to work with the executive committee is and all the subcommittees which joined their efforts with me to bring the Chamber on a global map. The need is to now sustain the growth and continue to expand the horizons of this great institution. In the coming years I hope to serve my best as the immediate past president. Hans Raj Choudhary iv
