    2. 2. Part 1: Core theme—patterns and change (SL/HL) <ul><li>There are four compulsory topics in this core theme. </li></ul><ul><li>1. Populations in transition </li></ul><ul><li>2. Disparities in wealth and development </li></ul><ul><li>3. Patterns in environmental quality and sustainability </li></ul><ul><li>4. Patterns in resource consumption </li></ul>

Part 2: Optional themes (SL/HL) <ul><li>There are seven optional themes; each requires 30 teaching hours. </li></ul><ul><li>Two optional themes are required at SL . </li></ul><ul><li>Three optional themes are required at HL . </li></ul><ul><li>A. Freshwater—issues and conflicts (rivers!) </li></ul><ul><li>B. Oceans and their coastal margins (coasts) </li></ul><ul><li>C. Extreme environments (deserts) </li></ul><ul><li>D. Hazards and disasters—risk assessment and response (volcanoes, earthquakes, landslides) </li></ul><ul><li>E. Leisure, sport and tourism </li></ul><ul><li>F. The geography of food and health </li></ul><ul><li>G. Urban environments (towns and cities) </li></ul>
    4. 4. Part 3: HL extension—global interactions (HL only) <ul><li>There are seven compulsory topics in the HL extension. </li></ul><ul><li>1. Measuring global interactions </li></ul><ul><li>2. Changing space—the shrinking world </li></ul><ul><li>3. Economic interactions and flows </li></ul><ul><li>4. Environmental change </li></ul><ul><li>5. Socio-cultural exchanges </li></ul><ul><li>6. Political outcomes </li></ul><ul><li>7. Global interactions at the local level </li></ul>

Fieldwork (SL/HL) <ul><li>Fieldwork, leading to one written report based on a fieldwork question, information collection and analysis with evaluation. </li></ul><ul><li>Strict Maximum 2,500 words (including photo annotation) </li></ul><ul><li>Max 20 hours </li></ul><ul><li>(not a fraction of the hassle of GCSE coursework!) </li></ul><ul><li>We’re off to Somerset tomorrow to measure the changes along a particular river course. </li></ul>
    6. 6. <ul><li>External assessment (2 hours 50 minutes) = 75% </li></ul><ul><li>Paper 1 (1 hour 30 minutes) </li></ul><ul><li>Syllabus content: Core theme </li></ul><ul><li>Section A: Students answer all short‑answer questions. Some include data. (45 marks) </li></ul><ul><li>Section B: Students answer one extended response question. (15 marks) </li></ul><ul><li>Section A and section B are common to both SL and HL assessment. </li></ul><ul><li>(60 marks) = 40% </li></ul><ul><li>Paper 2 (1 hour 20 minutes) </li></ul><ul><li>Syllabus content: Two optional themes </li></ul><ul><li>Students answer two structured questions based on stimulus material, each selected from a different optional theme. For each theme there is a choice of two questions. </li></ul><ul><li>(20 marks per question) </li></ul><ul><li>Some stimulus material is included in the resources booklet. </li></ul><ul><li>This paper is common to both SL and HL assessment. </li></ul><ul><li>(40 marks) = 35% </li></ul><ul><li>Internal assessment (20 hours) </li></ul><ul><li>Written report based on fieldwork. Maximum 2,500 words </li></ul><ul><li>(30 marks) = 25% </li></ul>

Maximum 2,500 words </li></ul><ul><li>(30 marks) = 20% </li></ul>

[4 marks] </li></ul><ul><li>(ii) Explain the difference between primary and secondary volcanic hazards, </li></ul><ul><li>giving two examples in each case. [3+3 marks] </li></ul><ul><li>(iii) Assess the extent to which responses C, D, E and F can be successfully </li></ul><ul><li>applied to areas at risk from volcanic eruptions. [10 marks] </li></ul>
