Ps1.1

 1. 1. 1.1Statistics Introducation By the end of class you will be able to explain how the study of statistics is used in the world.
 2. 2. Complete the K/T/W

What do you know about statistics?

What do you think you know about statistics?

What do you want to know about statistics?

 3. 3. What We Know:
 4. 4. What we think we know:
 5. 5. What we want to know:
 6. 6. What is Statistics?: The science of conducting studies to collect, organize, summarize, analyze, and draw conclusions from data.
 7. 7. 60% of people understand statistics 50% of people don’t understand statistics
 8. 8. Why Study Statistics?

To read and understand statistical studies

To conduct valid research

To become better educated consumers and citizens

 9. 9. 1.2: Descriptive and Inferential Statistics By the end of class you will be able to define basic statistical terms.
 10. 10. Statistical Terms

Variable: a characteristic or attribute that can assume different values

Example: temperature of a room

Data: values from measurements or observations that variables can assume

Example: 33 degrees, cold

 11. 11. Statistical Terms:

Random Variables: variables whose values are determined by chance

Ex: students in this class with July b-day, people wearing jeans today

 12. 12. 2 Branches of Statistics

Descriptive Statistics: collecting, organizing, summarizing, and presenting data (guaranteed results)

Inferential Statistics: generalizing from samples to populations/ performing estimations and hypothesis tests/determining relationships among variables/ making predictions

 13. 13. Example of Branches:

A teacher gives pd 2 a test and calculates the mean grade (descriptive)

A teacher predicts the mean test grade of pd 4/5 class based on pd 2 average.

 14. 14. Statistical Terms:

Population: Consists of all subjects being studied (men, Italians, etc.)

Sample: A group of subjects from a population. Samples are used to draw conclusions about populations.

 15. 15. Let’s Practice Attendance and Grades
 16. 16. Relay Summary

Write down one fact that you remember about the lesson.

Pass the summary sheet to the next person-read the fact, write a new one.

Continue process
