6. 6. What is Statistics?: The science of conducting studies to collect, organize, summarize, analyze, and draw conclusions from data.

8. 8. Why Study Statistics? <ul><li>To read and understand statistical studies </li></ul><ul><li>To conduct valid research </li></ul><ul><li>To become better educated consumers and citizens </li></ul>
9. 9. 1.2: Descriptive and Inferential Statistics By the end of class you will be able to define basic statistical terms.

Statistical Terms <ul><li>Variable: a characteristic or attribute that can assume different values </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Example: temperature of a room </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Data: values from measurements or observations that variables can assume </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Example: 33 degrees, cold </li></ul></ul>
11. 11. Statistical Terms: <ul><li>Random Variables: variables whose values are determined by chance </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Ex: students in this class with July b-day, people wearing jeans today </li></ul></ul>
12. 12. 2 Branches of Statistics <ul><li>Descriptive Statistics: collecting, organizing, summarizing, and presenting data (guaranteed results) </li></ul><ul><li>Inferential Statistics: generalizing from samples to populations/ performing estimations and hypothesis tests/determining relationships among variables/ making predictions </li></ul>
13. 13. Example of Branches: <ul><li>A teacher gives pd 2 a test and calculates the mean grade (descriptive) </li></ul><ul><li>A teacher predicts the mean test grade of pd 4/5 class based on pd 2 average. </li></ul>
14. 14. Statistical Terms: <ul><li>Population: Consists of all subjects being studied (men, Italians, etc.) </li></ul><ul><li>Sample: A group of subjects from a population. Samples are used to draw conclusions about populations. </li></ul>
