Description of UC Riverside, Library, and Staffing <ul><li>The University of California Riverside Libraries, Catalog Metadata Services Department. </li></ul><ul><li>UCR's current enrollment is 17,187 students with a goal of 21,000 students by 2010. </li></ul><ul><li>The University of California, Riverside libraries consist of four libraries on the UCR main campus. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>The Tomás Rivera Library </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The Science Library </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The Music Library </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The Multimedia Library </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Approximately 150 librarians and staff </li></ul>

New Technologies, Enhancement of Online Cataloging <ul><li>Use the following online cataloging tools: </li></ul><ul><li>Cataloger’s Desktop, Classification Web, Bib formats, Cutter tables, MARC 21, Romanization online tools </li></ul><ul><li>The department has a cataloging website which stores all of the online cataloging tools, links, and annual report data files </li></ul><ul><li>The department welcomes new technology whenever the catalogers are ready to participate in the development of social software: Blogs and Wiki </li></ul><ul><li>Digitizing a small photograph collection project </li></ul>

Database Maintenance, Holdings, and Physical Processing <ul><ul><li>MARCIVE used for authority control and maintenance </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>In house control for errors such typos or corrections to subject headings </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Library Assistant III assigned to make these corrections </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>*these corrections handled as discovered </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>*returned to person committing error only when beneficial for instructional purposes </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Mr. Urizolla plans to have all catalogers NACO trained as funding becomes available </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Acquisitions may create a brief record when new materials arrive, but catalogers perform all original cataloging </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>UCR employs serials librarians that create check-in items and holdings records, but they do not catalog </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Electronic resources are cataloged by UCSD through the UC System Shared Cataloging Project </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The Preservation Department performs binding and labeling, staff concerns about call numbering prevent the use of shelf-ready services </li></ul></ul>

Relationship with Acquisitions Departments <ul><li>Cataloging and Acquisitions are housed in separate departments </li></ul><ul><li>However UCR plans to follow Library of Congress’ lead and combine them in the near future </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Hope to streamline processing through cross-training </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Create stronger collaborative relationships between staff in these departments </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Currently no Web 2.0 tools are used to promote collaboration relationships between the departments </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>*waiting for committed interest from staff members </li></ul></ul></ul>

Staff Education <ul><li>UCR provides in-house training on the following: </li></ul><ul><li>MARC holdings format </li></ul><ul><li>Cataloging of non-books and e-resources </li></ul><ul><li>RDA: initial introductory training </li></ul><ul><li>FRBR: limited training </li></ul><ul><li>Implementation of a new integrated library system and its various components </li></ul>

Staff Education Con’t. <ul><li>The following trainings are done outside of the department: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Social networking </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Familiarity with XML (Extensible Markup Language), database tools and design </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Web-oriented service architecture </li></ul></ul><ul><li>UCR does not provide trainings on the following: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Training in institutional repository work: no repository on campus </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Foreign language cataloging: hire people with particular foreign language or subject expertise </li></ul></ul>
