  • The purpose of today’s meeting is not to cheerlead… or to frighten…. it is to inform & facilitate discussion. Ed Leader magazine….”Teaching Screenagers”. Article – “Good teaching trumps good tools.”
  • -How many of you have one of these? -Take yours out if you would please (pause) You realize that in most of our schools if you were a student you would have just been written up! - Possibly - From our discussion – Ask people to hold up smartphones…Ask, “how many of us set here today, play games & be rude to the speaker or set here connected to our office, staying up-to-date, putting out fires & participating in a rich learning experience at the same time? Are our students any different?
  • This is not another session about how our nation is being overrun by China & India…
  • We could do another text poll here…you have seen how that has been done
  • One of the few times an emerging technology has been co-opted by an older generation that was responsible for it reaching the tipping point
  • I was recently in a community meeting about the proposed drug testing bill. He wondered what had caused this to garner so much attention all of the sudden.
  • Boston College did something very unique & surprising in 2009. Many of us remember the struggles of assigning student email address early on in KETS… Boston College found the students responded much quicker to social media … when I email my daughter… (text)
  • Even the technology of technology is changing…
  • You have all heard this statemnet… Not just true for Vegas…. Also so true for Richardsville, Scottsville, Tompkinsville…
  • How many of you know someone who is married or been in a long term relationship that met over the Internet?
  • Social media, Facebook-Twitter kept the demonstrations going. The govt. shut down the Internet.
  • Iranian nuclear program …. For years, diplomacy, threats of invasion, and sanctions, could slow it down. A computer virus did…..
  • From the 3 rd largest nation of Facebook to middle age women in social media to an uprising in Egypt to nuclear disarmament this is probably something worth paying attention to. We hope today is a great opportunity for your district to explore & discuss in-depth what all of this means locally for you. You are in for a great day, we hope it is productive & you enjoy! Thank you!
