From Extract 1 choose three details that convey the
extreme heat of the dy. Give reasons for your choice.
When any source of liquid was dropped, the dry ground would
immediately be dry again as some of the water splashed out when
they were moving on. The group of children didn’t even speak to
one another; they were all longing for the sea. Even the great heat
affected the animals in despair. All were to lifeless to do anything
of the sort.
4
How did the heat affect the children?
The children weren’t even talking to each other, the extreme heat
were too hot to say even a single word. They were longing for the
sea. In other words, they craved to go and take a swim to cool off.
5
Explain, using your own words, how the animal life
responded to the heat.
The heat affected not only the humans, but the animals as well. Fish
couldn’t even move, because of any water of the dreadful drought;
lizards were trying to hide themselves from the baking sun.
Insects, too lazy to go or do something that involved moving not
even to mention, flying. Bullocks were fighting to just get their
burning feet from keep on going. The animals were suffering from
this unpleasant heat. No one could go or do as they’re pleased,
even living was uneasy.
6
Later in the day, a hurricane hits the area. How do
the descriptions in the passage suggest that
something serious is about to happen?
A fair-sized spring were bubbling up by the roadside, the next day, it
was dry! As they moved along with the crew, some of their water
splashed out and immediately, the water was gone. The ground
was so dry, it sucked up anything that sounded or felt like liquid.
The colour used to describe the sky also suggests that something
is brewing.
7
Extract 2: No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency
Tucked sth away- to put something in a private, safe place
Shadow of the hill-
A bare earth-
Wall around the yard-
A previous owner-
Neglect- to treat carelessly or not give enough attention to
Scale off-
Out of the van-
Light prickled-
Merciless- without mercy; cruel
8
From Extract 2 choose three words or phrase that suggest
that the house and its surroundings were unwelcoming and
hostile. Give reasons for your choice
“Tucked away” behind the trees almost “in the shadows of the hill.”
This describes a strange welcoming to the place which made it
eerie and half uncertain. And only their “ghosts remained.” This
tells us that the place was conscious, no one came there
anymore, but still, it’s the crime area.
9
Explain the effect of the sun on the woman in the
passage.
The baking hot sun touched her skin in a certain way, it touched her.
10
What was it that she did not like about third part of
the Kalahari Desert?
They were too far West and to close to the Kalahari Desert. Also the
way she didn’t remembered it, were that there weren’t much water.
The passage describes it, “this was the merciless Africa, the
waterless land.”
11
4. We learn in the book that the lady detective is visiting the
house of a murderer. How does the description of the house
and its surroundings emphasize this point?
“Suddenly she saw the house, tucked away behind the trees almost
in the shadow of the hill.” This made the crime scene in a way
scary and mysterious; it felt like there could suddenly be a
character to the scene. “A previous owner, a long time ago, had
painted designs on the wall, but neglect and the years had scaled
them off and only their ghosts remained…” This part of the
paragraph tells that the house had been neglect and that it
describes a strange feeling to it which didn’t made sense.
