Instructors should provide clear guidelinesfor interaction with students. Establish policies describing the types of communication thatshould take place over different channels. Example: "The public discussion forum is to be used for allcommunications except grade-related questions." Set clear standards for instructors timelines for responding tomessages. Example: "I will make every effort to respond to e-mail within twodays of receiving it"PRINCIPLE 1: GOOD PRACTICE ENCOURAGESSTUDENT-FACULTY CONTACT

Well-designed discussionassignments facilitate meaningfulcooperation among students. Learners should be required to participate (and their grade shoulddepend on participation). Discussion groups should remain small. Discussions should be focused on a task. Tasks should always result in a product. Learners should receive feedback on their discussions. Evaluation should be based on the quality of postings (and not thelength or number). Instructors should post expectations for discussions.PRINCIPLE 2: GOOD PRACTICE ENCOURAGESCOOPERATION AMONG STUDENTS

Students should present course projects. Projects are an important part of face-to-face courses.Students learn valuable skills from presenting theirprojects and are often motivated to perform at a higherlevel. Students also learn a great deal from seeing anddiscussing their peers work. While formal synchronouspresentations may not be practical online, instructorscan still provide opportunities for projects to be sharedand discussed asynchronously.PRINCIPLE 3: GOOD PRACTICE ENCOURAGESACTIVE LEARNING

Instructors need to provide two typesof feedback: information feedback andacknowledgment feedback. There are two kinds of feedback provided by online instructors:"information feedback" and "acknowledgement feedback." Information feedback provides information or evaluation, such as ananswer to a question, or an assignment grade and comments. Acknowledgement feedback confirms that some event has occurred. Forexample, the instructor may send an e-mail acknowledging that he or shehas received a question or assignment and will respond soon.PRINCIPLE 4: GOOD PRACTICE GIVESPROMPT FEEDBACK

Online courses need deadlines. Regularly-distributed deadlines encourage students to spendtime on tasks and help students with busy schedules avoidprocrastination. They also provide a context for regular contact with theinstructor and peers.PRINCIPLE 5: GOOD PRACTICE EMPHASIZESTIME ON TASK

Challenging tasks, samplecases, and praise for quality workcommunicate high expectations. Communicating high expectations for student performance isessential. Give challenging assignments. Provide examples or models for students to follow, along withcomments explaining why the examples are good. Publicly praising exemplary work. Do this by calling attention toinsightful or well-presented student postings.PRINCIPLE 6: GOOD PRACTICECOMMUNICATES HIGH EXPECTATIONS

Allowing students to choose projecttopics incorporates diverse views intoonline courses. Students shaped their own coursework by choosing project topicsaccording to a set of guidelines. Give students a voice in selecting their own topics for courseprojects, this encourages students to express their own diversepoints of view. Provide guidelines to help students select topics relevant to thecourse while still allowing students to share their uniqueperspectives.PRINCIPLE 7: GOOD PRACTICE RESPECTSDIVERSE TALENTS AND WAYS OF LEARNING
