WLCMS was built to satisfy our needs of providing a more professional hand over to clients and to reduce some of the functionality that was not necessary for 90% of our clients.\nWLCMS has had over 17,000 downloads so far.\nYou don't need to use WLCMS, you can recreate a lot of this yourself quit simply.\nWe also produce a premium plugin called the WordPress Manual Plugin which we will explain later when we talk about training your clients.\n

The over-arching idea throughout this presentation is to Remove The Clutter.\nAnecdote -  Before we developed the WLCMS, most of our training with clients used to begin with "ignore this and ignore that as it’s not relevant to your site!”\nLet’s go through the client experience and how to make it more awesome.\n

We are not trying to hide the fact that we use WordPress.\nWe wrote a whole e-book on how to Sell WordPress to clients. We interviewed Tammy Hart (official Automattic WordPress Consultant and speaker at WordCamp Miami) and she said when explaining WordPress to clients she always says "instead of having 6 programmers on your team, youʼre actually going to have 10,000”. Thatʼs what you get with WordPress.\nThe point of replacing WordPress logos with your clients logo's is provide your client with something which looks like it has been built for them.\nBranding the login screen makes a huge difference to the clients perception of the site.\n
Anecdote - The dashboard was the one page in WordPress that used to make us cringe when we were handing it over to clients.\nWe would always try and get off the dashboard as quickly as possible, because there so many panels which make it look very overwhelming as well as nag updates.\n Clients don't care about the WordPress Blog! \nHowever, WordPress comes with a solution built in in order to simplify the dashboard.\n
WLCMS has this built in by default to remove all the panels.\nWe are amazed at the number of developers who do not make this simple change.\n

The ability to add an introduction panel is included in WLCMS.\nWe have generic introduction text on our intranet which contains the html code.\nAs part of our setup process we just copy and paste it in and add the clients name.\nIt takes less than 30 seconds, but in our opinion it makes a big difference to simplifying the admin for clients.\n

The reasoning for this is the same as for the login branding.\nWe also add our company logo into the footer as we thinks it presents our company in a more professional way (this is just personal preference).\nWLCMS allows you to do this, but there are lots of other branding plugins which can do this as well.\n

We build WLCMS to include 2 profiles, Website and Blog.\nIf you select either of them it will only show the relevant menus to Editors.\nFor example, if you select the Website role, it would hide the Posts, Links, Comments, Tools menus.\nWe also made it so you can show the appearance module for clients to access the menus and widgets options, but it will not allow Editors to change the theme.\n\nThere are many other plugins which can do this as well including Adminimize, and Members which were mentioned before.\n

Using the pages module in WordPress can be confusing for clients, especially if there are a lot of pages on the site.\nClients understand the visual view of their site a lot better than a simple list of pages.\nCMS Tree Page view allows you reorder pages easily, insert pages, and drag and drop sections.\nWe also recommend Page Mash, or you can actually build your own plugin to cover specific functionality that you need.\nSome of the advantages of making your own plugin is that you can name it whatever you like, place it wherever you like in the menu and if you use someone else’s plugin and they update it you might have to re-make your training materials. Making your own plugin gives you more control.\n
