Digital Publishing 101: Fixed Layout, from 2014 National Museum Publishing Seminar

  1. 1. Fixed layout Tina Henderson @tinahender tinahenderson.com
  2. 2. Types • PDF (static or interactive) • Fixed-layout EPUB (iPad, Nook, Kobo) • Fixed-layout KF8 (Kindle) • Multi-Touch books (Apple’s iBooks Author) • Book apps (Adobe’s DPS/Mag+)
  3. 3. PDF •  total control over layout •  can be optimized, limited interactivity can be added (hyperlinks, buttons) •  coding ability not required •  cannot be sold through usual vendors (Amazon, Apple, B&N) •  potential for consumer disappointment
  4. 4. Fixed-layout EPUB •  control over layout, but may run into font differences on different platforms •  best with limited amounts of text •  searchable text •  Read-Aloud and limited other interactivity •  must know some code, difficult to create in code, but with latest Creative Cloud release can now export from InDesign
  5. 5. Fixed-layout KF8 •  similar to fixed-layout EPUB, but Amazon’s proprietary format •  “available only on these devices” •  must know some code •  Region Magnification, enlarged text
  6. 6. Multi-Touch books •  Apple’s proprietary version of epub, created with free, Mac-only, WYSIWYG software: iBooks Author •  total control over layout (if you choose) •  no coding required •  easily add interactivity via widgets •  currently only for iPad and Macs running Mavericks •  can create hybrid reflowable/fixed ebook
  7. 7. Multi-Touch interactivity •  audio, video •  interactive images, slideshows •  hyperlinks, scrolling content, pop-ups •  hybrid reflowable/fixed ebook possible
  8. 8. Book apps •  total control over layout •  App Store, not iBookstore •  lay out and add interactivity in InDesign •  create free single-edition apps with Adobe’s DPS •  Apple may reject if not enough interactivity (wants books in iBookstore)
  9. 9. Book apps interactivity •  audio/video, animation •  panoramic images, slideshows, pan and zoom, 360° views •  hyperlinks, scrolling content, pull-tabs •  dual-orientation possible (not automatic)
