Sound Therapy (short version)

 1. 1. Sound Therapy: Natural Hearing Improvement Simone Carot Collins Sound Therapy Consultant
 2. 2. A little about me

Lost 10% of my hearing due to ear infections

By age 14, had noise induced hearing loss and tinnitus from loud music

Completed 2 science degrees at UWA

Used Sound Therapy in 2003 – it worked! My hearing improved and my tinnitus disappeared.

 3. 3. Patricia Joudry's Story

In the 1980s, Patricia Joudry was treated at the Tomatis Clinic in Montreal

Listening program developed by French ENT specialist Dr Alfred Tomatis (1920 – 2001)

Uses specially filtered classical music to rehabilitate the ear and stimulate the brain

 4. 4. Patricia Joudry's Story

It cured her insomnia, exhaustion, sound sensitivity and writers block

With the help of Benedictine monks trained in Sound Therapy, Patricia produced a portable, self-help version of the listening program

Her daughter Rafaele, now living in NSW, has continued her work

 5. 5. How does Sound Therapy work?

Our bodies are designed to hear high frequencies – they recharge us

Fluctuating sounds alternating between highs and lows give the ear muscles a gym work out

This tones the muscles, which helps them work properly

 6. 6. How does Sound Therapy work?

The high frequencies also stimulate the brain, and help it build new connections

These frequencies also address the psychological aspect of hearing.

Different to other music therapies as the sound has a physiological effect on the ear and brain

Consistent treatment over a certain period of time modifies hearing and speech permanently

 7. 7. How it helps the ear

3 tiny bones – first to develop in utero: hammer , anvil and stirrup

Smallest & densest bones in the body

Hearing is a vital sense to a foetus

 8. 8. How it helps the ear

2 muscles: tensor tympani & stapedius

Allow us to tune in to sounds we want to hear

Sound Therapy tones these muscles

High frequencies stimulate hair cells in inner ear

 9. 9. Sound Therapy and Hearing Loss

Assists with hearing in a noisy room – hearing aids often make this worse

Tunes up high frequency hearing , making speech comprehension easier

Improves the body’s own function rather than compensating with a device

 10. 10. Research Study

I am conducting a study to measure any changes to hearing after 300 hours of Sound Therapy

There is a cost to participate, purely to cover costs of the tests and equipment

Includes 2 hearing tests & Listening Foundation program on Mini MX1 player with high quality headphones

 11. 11. Sound Therapy and Tinnitus

Tinnitus is a noise heard inside the ear that no one else can hear

It is neurons firing from internal, not external, stimuli:

Damage to the cilia

Fluid imbalance

Hyperactive brain cells

No conventional treatment for tinnitus

 12. 12. Sound Therapy and Tinnitus

The movement in the ear muscles caused by Sound Therapy can rebalance the fluid in the inner ear

Brain cells are calmed

Flattened cilia may be stimulated to regain their upright position

Triumph Over Tinnitus offers other treatments plus chemicals to avoid

 13. 13. Learning and speech disorders

Many of these disorders are auditory reception problems – they can’t make sense of what they hear. (ADD / ADHD)

Another problem is confused laterality . A time delay in sounds going from the left ear to the right brain and then the left brain can cause stuttering or dyslexia.

Sound Therapy produces right ear dominance

 14. 14. How do you use it?

Requires a portable player with headphones – a new program on an “Ultra Light” or “Mini MX1” player is now available

Doesn’t take any time out of your day

Volume is kept very low

You can still hear everything around you

 15. 15. How long does it take?

3 hours a day for adults

30 mins a day for children

Average time for significant change is 3 months

Children generally respond quickly

Hearing and tinnitus can take much longer (6+ months), but usually some change is evident in that time

Time required varies from person to person

 16. 16. How much does it cost?

Younger Children's Program : $299 3 music & story albums on Mini

Older Children's Program : $399 5 music & story albums on Mini

Listening Foundation Program : $599 4 music albums on Mini or Ultra Light

Family Program : $999 13 music & story albums on 3 Minis

Preloaded on a player with headphones

1/10 th the cost of similar programs (SoListen, Neuromonics etc)

Payment plans available
