2nd conditional

  1. 1. The Second Conditional Garfield doesn’t know what would be fun. Laziness COMES naturally to Garfield.
  2. 2. Use SECOND Conditional : To refer to a hypothetical or imaginary situation. Compare: I don’t have much money, so I can’t buy a house ( real situation ). If I had more money, I would buy a bigger house ( hypothetical situation ).

FORM <ul><li>{if clause - past simple } + { would/could + infinitive } </li></ul><ul><li>If he spoke German, he could get a job in a hotel. </li></ul><ul><li>I would get on better with my parents if I didn’t live with them. </li></ul><ul><li>If you weren’t so aggressive, you would have more friends. </li></ul>
  4. 4. If I were you… <ul><li>Use the construction If I were you… to give advice: </li></ul><ul><li>A: I have a terrible pain in my head. </li></ul><ul><li>B: If I were you , I would go to the doctor. </li></ul>

I can’t do it. </li></ul><ul><li>If I were in your position, I could do it. </li></ul><ul><li>2. I am fit. I will go climbing </li></ul><ul><li>If I were fit, I wouldn’t go climbing. </li></ul><ul><li>3. I am in a hurry. I won't stay to dinner. </li></ul><ul><li>If I weren’t in a hurry, I would stay to dinner. </li></ul><ul><li>4. He's not a millionaire. He won't buy you a palace. </li></ul><ul><li>If he were a millionaire, he would buy a palace. </li></ul><ul><li>5. The weather isn't sunny. We won't stay indoors. </li></ul><ul><li>If the weather were sunny, we would stay indoors. </li></ul>
