Tork UK: "Good Workplace Hygiene Is... achievable in four crucial steps"

  1. 1. “Good workplace hygiene is...” …achievable in four crucial steps http://torkuk.wordpress.com
  2. 2. Hygiene and Facilities “Good workplace hygiene • Hygiene is particularly important in the workplace where infections may quickly spread, leading to mass absenteeism and therefore a loss of productivity • Hygienic washrooms and good hand washing facilities can play a major part in helping to reduce sickness, both at home and at work
  3. 3. “Good workplace hygiene Conduct a risk assessment of where infection transmission is most likely to occur. This includes washrooms and kitchens in particular. Step 1
  4. 4. “Good workplace hygiene Step 2 Provide facilities for effective hand washing and drying. Warm air dryers may not dry hands adequately and a hot or jet air dryer can disperse microbes around the washroom.
  5. 5. “Good workplace hygiene Step 3 Disinfect surfaces that are likely to be contaminated by hand or food contact. Key areas include door handles, food preparation or eating surfaces and light switches. Surfaces can be quickly recolonised by microbes, so no reliance should be placed on disinfection without efficient hand washing.
  6. 6. “Good workplace hygiene Provide information to encourage good hygiene, especially during outbreaks or widely publicised epidemics. The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work identified poor risk assessment and associated lack of information provision high in their ‘top ten’ of emerging biological risks in the workplace. 7. 7. “Good workplace hygiene The lesson from major outbreaks is that the number of cases can be reduced by timely risk assessment, prompt hygiene control measures, encouraging hand washing and information to staff – including take-home messages so that both the office and the home can function efficiently and keep the nasty microbes, those little beasts, at a safe distance. The upshot?
