  2. 2. Function Notation • y=mx+b can be written as f(x)=mx+b or “f of x” = mx+b • Purpose: to be more specific about what variable the equation is a function of. F(x) means we will be replacing the “x” in the equation with the number placed in the parentheses. • The parentheses do not mean f times x. • Other letters may be used such as g(x)=mx+b for other functions.
