Father Pfleger - Chicago Activist

His Mission <ul><li>Father Pfleger’s mission is to decrease gun-violence on the south side of Chicago. </li></ul><ul><li>Eliminate gang-violence, related crimes. </li></ul><ul><li>Help those in need </li></ul><ul><li>Make Chicago a safer place to live. </li></ul><ul><li>Attract supports to spread his message. </li></ul>

Billboards <ul><li>Counted 118 tobacco and alcohol related billboards in a 10 block radius of Saint Sabina Church on the south side. </li></ul><ul><li>Helped lead a movement to deface these billboards and spread a positive message to children. </li></ul><ul><li>The new billboards featured a teddy bear and stated, &quot;Alcohol, Tobacco, and Billboard Companies Obey the City Ordinance and Stop Targeting Us! Signed, Children of Chicago.&quot; </li></ul><ul><li>Father Pfleger was the lead contributor on the banning of alcohol and tobacco endorsed billboards in specified areas in 1997. </li></ul><ul><li> </li></ul>

Billboards <ul><li>Father Pfleger also started the movement against certain rappers. </li></ul><ul><li>Wanted to stop the spread of fowl and derogatory language, actions against women, and endorsement of violence. </li></ul><ul><li>Created billboards stating, “Stop listening to Trash” </li></ul>

The Jerry Springer Show <ul><li>Father Pfleger was outraged with the actions being seen on the show by impressionable children and young adults. </li></ul><ul><li>Wrote letters and urged advertisers to pull sponsorships of the show. </li></ul><ul><li>Organized an enormous rally of over 300 religious leaders to rally against the show and NBC. </li></ul><ul><li>After enough word had spread, NBC cancelled the show, although FOX picked it up. </li></ul>
  6. 7. The Jerry Springer Show <ul><li>Urged FOX to cancel the show, but settled upon the termination of showing violence on the program. </li></ul><ul><li>After ratings plummeted, Fox renewed showing violence, although ratings have never fully recovered. </li></ul><ul><li> </li></ul>

Helping Prostitutes <ul><li>Father Pfleger was brave enough to do what no one had previously ever done before. </li></ul><ul><li>Along with his supporters, he raised several thousands of dollars to help people on the streets. </li></ul><ul><li>Father Pfleger would pay prostitutes for their time while helping them get job training and proper counseling. </li></ul><ul><li>He has helped dozens of women get off the streets. </li></ul><ul><li> </li></ul>

Fight against guns, violence <ul><li>One of Father Pfleger’s most passionate movements. </li></ul><ul><li>Has helped or lead in the closing of several gun shops which sold directly to gang members. </li></ul><ul><li>Has helped get more guns off the streets and out of the hands of the wrong people. </li></ul><ul><li>Hosts many demonstrations outside firearm dealers urging them to be shut down. </li></ul><ul><li>Is seen on many media outlets spreading his movement and gaining more followers to stop the violence. </li></ul>
  9. 12. Fight against guns, violence <ul><li>Hosts a march with other Chicago citizens through the spring and summer months every Friday night to fight violence. This is when gun violence is most common. </li></ul><ul><li>Hosts vigils for the innocent that have been killed by gang violence, many which are filmed and broadcasted on local news stations. </li></ul><ul><li>Very outspoken when it comes to gang-violence and has gained the support of many influential individuals like Jesse Jackson to help in the movement. </li></ul><ul><li> </li></ul>

  11. 14. Hosts many rallies and speaking engagements to help save the innocent, and make the south side of Chicago a safer place to live .
