I blogged about SharePoint on the SharePoint platform for 6 years and now I'm back to WordPress. One reason? Azure Web Sites are cool

  • When using SharePoint, sometimes, it's just as important to know when SharePoint isn't the right solution. Some of us have learned this the hard way. For my public blogging, I chose SharePoint many years ago and continued for too long. I recently migrated to Azure Web Sites.
Come to learn about some of the pros and cons of using SharePoint for Public Blogs, some of the challenges I overcame to migrate and some of the benefits of WordPress on Azure.
  • One of my professional goals is to improve web communications through better technology use. Do I share that goal with you? Do we agree blogging is a powerful web communications tool?
This is a presentation on blogging, based on my personal experience with multiple blogging platforms. I’m not only going to talk about SharePoint. I’m going to talk about a best of breed blogging solution that may be slightly outside our shared personal area of technical focus.
  • This is a message that I'm ashamed to admit took me way too long to get. While it was very common to recommend quickly moving beyond SharePoint's discussion forums from their first release, I continued to recommend SharePoint blogs beyond their practical usefulness.
  • Maybe that’s even a good litmus test for your SharePoint consultant.  Tell him you want to stand up a public blog and ask him what you should use
  • I’m Tom Resing and I joined Jive as a Sales Engineer almost 5 months ago.
I’ve specialized in SharePoint Development exclusively for the past 7 years. I’ve earned an exclusive certification, co-authored two Microsoft Press books and earned two Microsoft MVP awards.
  • Jive does three things. Social Intranets, Self Service Support and External Communities. Jive is a hub of collaboration that helps organizations cross boundaries

  • Anyone remember Windows Live Spaces? It was a free blog platform from Microsoft that migrated to Wordpress almost 4 years ago.
  • And lot’s of other SharePoint bloggers have made the move.
  • Even the SharePoint Team moved off of SharePoint for blogging last year.
  • You can see it in the source code. It’s actually running the latest stable edition! 3.9.1 as of 6/24/2014
  • Now there are other options. Andrew Connell, a long time SharePoint MVP, prefers Orchard, which is a .Net based content management system. One thing I like about that platform is that it can use Azure SQL, which is cloud ready compared to legacy databases like Microsoft SQL Server and MySQL.
