Hi, I am Tomoyo Onda. I am going to present about my whole high school life based on ways of knowing.
In my high school life at ISB, I learned various valuable things through many activities and curriculum. By doing this project, I learned ways of knowing which are reason, perception, language and emotion.
I chose two significant learning events; one for history project which is animal extinction in Indonesia because I could use all four aspects of WoK and I realized that I need to balance reason, perception and language with emotion for impact. The second one is sports activity because my emotion is the strongest motivator to success and to have self-confidence.
This is the example of history which I did during TSEA. The serious question was “Is Indonesian Government Doing Enough to Prevent Animal Extinction and Deforestation?”. From perception, I found the photographs which shows animal extinction in the forest in Indonesia. I felt that Indonesian government is not doing enough to prevent animal extinction and deforestation by seeing photos. However, media might creates “social bias” through interest groups to change “facts” to make them seem reliable and unbiased when they really might not be. Media uses bias and emotion and language to make their issue. My challenge was to make an argument using reason. I realized that it is best to use a combination of both primary and secondary sources and use language that was not bias as much as possible to avoid being blinded by bias, and to instill a greater sense of understanding overall. It is necessary to use both sources to get more balanced perception of an event. However, I used photographs for emotion because in order to make impact for if nothing is done by government then this photographs might be true everywhere. For me, using perception, reason and language is not enough because the most important for impact is emotion because emotion is human. People always connect to emotion. By doing this project, when I read something, I need to think about two sides of issues and be careful of information that is too much emotion or too little emotion. Too much---lose perception and reason. Too little---I lose feeling and impacts. Over all, I realized that it is important to have perception, reason and language but also I need to have emotion to make it impact.
Over all, by doing this project, I could learn not only academic study but also the importance and meaning of study and connected to the WoK. This project tells me that our learning is essentially done to learn more of the concepts themselves than the study itself. From my high school life, I gained not only academic knowledge but also how do they connected my life and how do they importance to my core life. It was the opportunity to realize that how each subject is interconnected and use them to the successful future. For the future, I will keep in mind that all things that I am faced are interconnected and need to be balanced all of aspects of WoK. Also my emotion changes all consequences both positive and negative ways, so it is important to realize how emotion affects me and others to succeed or not. I learned my emotion is important motivator to success in gaining knowledge but I must remember that even though emotion is the strongest for me, all the aspects need to be balanced.
