WATER SUPPLY OFATHENS• Throughout its long history, the city of Athens had to deal with the same problem. Water scarcity.• The water supply of Athens was mainly achieved through wells and springs.• There were many fountains scattered everywhere in the city, but many rainwater reservoirs as well.• The most famous ancient aqueducts were the Pesistratus 530 bc and the Adrianon 134-140ac.
WATER SOURCES FOR ATTICA. CAPACITY OF RESERVOIRS• The Dam and lake of Marathon with average capacity of 14.400.000m3 per year.• Natural lake of Yliki with average capacity of 600.000.000m3 but 13 is lost to ground drainage.
WATER SOURCES FOR ATTICA.CAPACITY OF RESERVOIRS• The Dam and lake of Mornos with average capacity of 210.000.000m3 per year.• The Dam and lake of Evinos with average water capacity of 220.000.000m3 per year.
WHAT IS THE WATER QUALITY OFTHE WATER SOURCES? IS ITDRINKABLE?• The water of the four large lakes that supply Athens, must go through the water treating plants, where it is cleaned and disinfected.• The water net of Athens today is drinkable and of excellent quality, considered among the best in Europe.
BOTTLED WATER. WHAT IS THE STORY IN GREECE• Greece is among the top 10 countries in Europe with the largest bottled water consumption per person.• The largest consumption is taking place in the summer. In areas with bad quality water, people drink bottled water throughout the year.
ALTERNATIVE WATER SOURCES • Reuse of treated household water from daily activities. • Desalinization.( extract salts from sea water) • Reusage of treated sewage system water. • Small and medium size systems of collecting and storing water. • Water flow in drainage areas and the replenishments of underground water horizons.
SEWAGE WATER TREATING PLANT• Psitalia is a small island of the Saronic gulf, between the harbour of Piraeus and the island of Salamina. An area of 0,375 km2 with no permanent residents.• On the island you find the largest sewer system treating plant , with incoming sewage flow of 730.000m3 daily.• This plant was the main factor for the great improvement of the water quality of the Saronic gulf, and the improvement of the quality of life of the people living in the nearby areas…..
