Business tourism • Business tourism is travel for commercial, professional and work-related purposes • Historically, it is one of the earliest types of tourist activity • It brings significant economic benefits to destinations • It is less affected by seasonality than leisure tourism • It can enhance the image of the destination as a centre of trade / knowledge / expertise

How can we persuade business visitors to stay longer to enjoy the leisure attractions of the destination? • Include information on tourist attractions and events in familiarisation trips and bid documents • Attend association conferences the year before they come to your destination and showcase the tourist attractions of the city and the surrounding area.

How can we persuade business visitors to stay longer to enjoy the cultural attractions of the destination? • Provide a Tourism Information desk at larger conferences, during the event. • Adapt tours, guest programmes and excursions to the interests of the particular delegate group • Create a discount scheme for business visitors, at local restaurants, shops, car-hire companies and cultural attractions

Rob Davidson Centre for Tourism University of Westminster The challenges we face •Shortage of time: delegates are often under pressure to return to work / home •Financial considerations: especially for self- funding delegates •Conference planners’ knowledge of the cultural riches of the destination •Business visitors may not remain in the conference destination, for their leisure time.

  20. 20. Technology • Advances in communication technology and internet access allow remote working • Less emphasis on rigid physical presence at set hours • More emphasis on getting the work done
