Sheree, a cartoonist and professor, led a workshop where she encouraged children to draw pictures telling a story without words. She had them draw familiar things like people or animals and think about adding details to show if their character liked or disliked the rain. Sheree then arranged the children's drawings into panels to create a new collaborative story together using the progression of pictures. The workshop taught the children how cartoonists use illustrations instead of words to convey a narrative.

2. TO START OFF

Boy by Ralph Consentino and
how the book had no words.
It’s up to the illustrator or
cartoonist to let the reader
know what’s happening
through pictures.
She asked the children a lot of
questions to get them thinking
about how pictures work.

3. SHE ENCOURAGED THE CHILDREN TO

She had them draw
something familiar.

4. PEOPLE AND ANIMALS
They all decided to draw
people or animals!

5. RAINY DAY
Then she had the children think
about what their picture wanted
to say.
It was a rainy day so they talked
about whether or not their
‘character’ liked the rain.
How would they show if the
character liked the rain?
The children decided the clue
would be if the character was
smiling or not – or if they had an
umbrella!
