Final Fiesta Student Example PowerPoint #1

 1. 1. Gloves for Safety Excellent Student PSY 460 Fall 2006 TA: Jessica Irish
 2. 2. Krispy Kreme Doughnut Corporation store 339 Portage, MI

This is a real setting and a real problem for employees but a hypothetical intervention

 3. 3. Why Intervene?

HIGH INJURY NUMBERS!

Working with temperatures up to 360 degrees
 4. 4. This = HOT!!!!!!!!!! 360 ◦
 5. 5. Analyze the Natural Contingencies

Although it is more safe to wear gloves, doughnuts are easier to handle when not wearing gloves.

I think a higher force is at work here…
 6. 6. Analyze the Natural Contingencies Ineffective Natural Contingency Employee has given level of safety Employee wears gloves Employee has slightly higher level of safety
 7. 7. Analyze the Natural Contingencies Natural Competing Contingency Easy to handle doughnuts Employee wears gloves Harder to handle doughnuts
 8. 8. Baseline Graph Glove PM
 9. 9. Baseline Graph Description

Employees are wearing gloves approximately 60% of the time.

UNACCEPTABLE when it comes to safety! Employees are to be above average at Krispy Kreme
 10. 10. Specify the Performance Objectives

The goal is to increase the percentage of time the employee wears gloves while working around the fryer so that injuries can decrease while the level of safety increases

 11. 11. Input-Process-Output Model

(Employees wear gloves 100% of the time handling doughnuts near the fryer.) [Output]

Production: Training employees to wear gloves with PM techniques [Process]

(Employees who do not wear gloves 100% of the time when handling doughnuts near the fryer.) [Input]

 12. 12. Goal Specification Form Employees who do not wear gloves 100% of the time when handling doughnuts near the fryer. Input R&D__ _ Distribution_ __ Production: X Training employees to wear gloves 100% of the time using PM techniques Process Materials no more than $200 N/A Cost Before entering fryer area No strong enforcement Timeliness All employees 60% of employees Quantity All doughnuts dropped in the fryer wrong should be handled and saved for retail. Fix doughnuts if notice incorrect dropping Ideal Current Quality Standards Employees who wear gloves 100% of the time when handling doughnuts near the fryer Output
 13. 13. Design the Intervention

Supervisor monitors employees and records their glove use on a chart/job aid near the fryer. If gloves are worn 100% of the time the employee will receive an extended break!!!!!!!!!

 14. 14. Design the Intervention Performance Management Contingency Employee has given level of safety Employee wears gloves Employee has slightly higher level of safety Employee does not have opportunity for extended break Employee wears gloves Employee does have opportunity for extended break
 15. 15. Implement the Intervention

It starts with the employee, for their change in behavior due to their contingency they have the opportunity to receiver longer breaks while on the job (who does not want a break from working...!).

Supervisors and managers then have opportunities for raises depending on employee performance
 16. 16. Evaluate the Intervention Glove PM
 17. 17. Evaluate the Intervention

The intervention proved to be very effective. Percentage of time wearing gloves increased from approx. 60% to 94% of the time. This is an unbelievable change of 34%, which surpassed the goal of a 30% increase.

Employees = SAFE &
 18. 18. Recycle (hypothetical)

Because performance dropped it became required to call the supervisor to the area prior to working around the fryer. Supervisor signs a sheet verifying that employee wears gloves

 19. 19. Evaluate the Recycle Glove PM
 20. 20. Evaluate the Recycle

Most employees followed this step resulting to near 100% performance!!!!!!!!!!!
