Unity

 1. 1. Unity
 2. 2. John 17:1-26

(1) These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:

(2) As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.

(3) And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

(4) I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.

(5) And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

(6) I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.

 3. 3.

(7) Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee.

(8) For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received [them], and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.

(9) I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.

(10) And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.

(11) And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we [are].

(12) While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.

 4. 4.

(13) And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.

(14) I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

(15) I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.

(16) They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

(17) Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

(18) As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.

 5. 5.

(19) And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.

(20) Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

(21) That they all may be one ; as thou, Father, [art] in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

(22) And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:

(23) I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

 6. 6.

(24) Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.

(25) O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.

(26) And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare [it]: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

 7. 7. The Heart of Jesus’ Prayer

It is clear to see that the heart of Jesus’ prayer here is UNITY…

He didn’t want his followers to be divided…

But today we are divided over many things.

 8. 8. Background..

Right after the last supper…

On their way to the Garden …

Where Jesus prays again.. ‘not my will but thine”

 9. 9. Hours before his crucifixion he is praying for US to be unified…

(20) Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

 10. 10. WHY?…

Why was Jesus concerned about our unity…

Why is Unity soooo important?

 11. 11. Let’s look at the early church.. Acts 2:42-47

(42) And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

(43) And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.

(44) And all that believed were together, and had all things common;

(45) And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all [men], as every man had need.

(46) And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,

(47) Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

 12. 12. When you hear about the early church what do you think of?

Their Love for each other?…

Their giving up everything for the common good?

Their benevolence?

Their continuing in the true doctrine.?

Miracles done?

 13. 13. To many, the most unique thing about the early church was their:

Approach to money and possessions.

It was impressive and they do challenge us today.

But their willingness to practice “radical sharing” was the result of an even more impressive trait:

 14. 14. Unity

(Act 4:32) And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any [of them] that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.

(Acts 2:46) And they, continuing daily with one accord…

 15. 15. Can you Imagine…

What the church could do today if we were “one heart and of one soul”, or in one accord

 16. 16. Christian Unity: The Principle

First of all to we need to define Unity…

And sometimes the easiest way to define something is to look at what it is NOT.

1. Unity is not everyone going their own way…

2. Unity is not everyone doing their own thing…

3. Unity is not everyone being like everyone else.. we don’t need clones of our pastor.

 17. 17. So what IS unity?

From Heritage Dictionary:

The state or quality of being one; singleness.

The state or quality of being in accord; harmony.

The combination or arrangement of parts into a whole; unification.

Singleness or constancy of purpose or action; continuity

 18. 18. These Four definitions apply to Christ followers.

1. The state or quality of being one; singleness.

We are to be of one heart and soul…

Everyone connected to Christ.

All believers have one thing in common… Jesus Christ..

No matter what our differences, we have Jesus in common

 19. 19. 2. The state or quality of being in accord; harmony…

We can’t be all clones and have harmony. Harmony is not being identical.. but being compatible

 20. 20. 3. The combination of arrangement of parts into a whole; unification…

From Romans 12 and 1 Corinthians 12 we learn that God places into his body people with gifts that he gives,

Everyone is different….

But we all have a job to do..

And each body of believers has everything they need to do God’s work.

 21. 21. 4. Singleness or constancy of purpose or action; continuity

We may be different. But we are all connected to Jesus, and he gave us a job to do… Every believer has 5 common purposes..

Fellowship,

Doctrine,

Ministry,

Worship,

Mission….

 22. 22. Christian Unity: Its product

Radical Love and sharing.. Act 4:32:

And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any [of them] that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.

 23. 23. When we are Unified:

1. We can’t help but love each other,

2. We can’t help but share with each other

3. We will not be focused on “What we want” or what’s best for us.. but we will be focused on the common good of the church.

 24. 24.

Too many people are shopping for churches that satisfies their needs or their families needs…

When looking for a church people should be looking for a church in which their gifts can be useful…

 25. 25. Another Product: Protection.

When we are unified we have protection from Satan.. .we protect each other..

When people hurt we comfort.

When people fall we pick them up.

When people gossip we defend the victim.

 26. 26. Christian Unity: It’s purpose.

To witness

Acts 4:33

And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.

 27. 27.

Attract others to Christ.

(21) That they all may be one; as thou, Father, [art] in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

 28. 28.

A fractured church results in a fruitless witness.

If we want to see this church grow we must become more unified.

 29. 29. Where do we start?

With ourselves.. Are you DEVOTED to Jesus?

As a member of this church YOU have a responsibility to this church…

1. Attendance… Sunday morning, night, and Wed. night

2. Giving of your finances, time, talents.

3. Prayer…

If you are not upholding your responsibilities you are holding back this church from being unified.

 30. 30.

The first church only had 12 people… look what they did.

 31. 31. Each His Part

"I did," said the sticks. "I did," said the paper. "I did," said the boy. "No, I did," said the wind. But they all flew the kite together. If the sticks had broken, the tail caught in a tree, the paper torn or the wind was lulled, the kite would have come down. Each had a part to play.

 32. 32. The application is inescapable.

We each have a work to do.

If the work of the Lord is to be a success, then every member of the church must play his part.

We have the work of visiting, giving, preaching, and countless other jobs to do to make the church and its work successful.

 33. 33. We must all work together and each do what he can to help. It is a matter of teamwork

1 Corinthians 3:6-9

(6) I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.

(7) So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.

(8) Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.

(9) For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, [ye are] God's building.

What is God telling you to do now? Come talk it over with him…
