He was forsaken so you don't have to be

 1. 1. He was forsaken so you don’t have to be! Thanking God this Palm Sunday…
 2. 2. My God, my God, why has thou forsaken me?!!! Matt 27:46
 3. 3. Let’s go back to understand just what that phrase really means…

Back before Creation….

 4. 4. Announcement to Mary
 5. 5. Birth of Jesus
 6. 6. Jesus at 12 yrs old
 7. 7. Jesus’ Baptism
 8. 8. Ministry after temptation
 9. 9. The changing point…

Luke 9:28-36

(28) And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.

(29) And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment [was] white [and] glistering.

(30) And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:

(31) Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.

 10. 10. Luke 9:32-36

(32) But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.

(33) And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.

(34) While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud.

(35) And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.

(36) And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept [it] close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.

 11. 11. When they left this mountaintop everything changed…

Jesus started telling them about his death and resurrection…

This was about a year before His Crucifixion.

 12. 12. Mark 10:32-34

(32) And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus went before them: and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid. And he took again the twelve, and began to tell them what things should happen unto him,

(33) [Saying] , Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles:

(34) And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he shall rise again.

 13. 13. You would think they could understand that…

But nooo… in the very next verses…

Mark 10:34-40

(34) And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he shall rise again.

(35) And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire.

(36) And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you?

 14. 14.

(37) They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory.

(38) But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?

(39) And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized:

(40) But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give; but [it shall be given to them] for whom it is prepared.

(41) And when the ten heard [it] , they began to be much displeased with James and John.

 15. 15. I can see it now….

Some of the disciples might have said,

“ Now you did it.. you done made him mad, now none of us are going to get that seat!!!”

Sometimes I think the 12 should have been called the 12 DUHHHsciples!

 16. 16. They didn’t understand:

Jesus’ purpose.

Jesus’ Mission, It was not a military overthrow…

This could have been the reason so many ran the night of the betrayal…

 17. 17. But they keep trudging on…

Blind receive sight…

 18. 18. Parables are taught…

With the lesson behind them that God is searching for the lost…

 19. 19. Some of his teachings…

Lost coin,

Lost son,

Lost sheep

 20. 20.

He also taught parables and said things that gave a hint that God was through with Israel and that He is ready to turn to the gentiles….

Branch grafted in…

The older son in the prodigal son parable.

The ten lepers that were healed

The ten virgins that let their lights go out..

All of these parables deal with the fact that God gave Israel a chance, but she blew it, now he was going to do something else…. The Church was being formed…

 21. 21. But did the disciples get it?

No! they were still arguing over who was the best disciple…

Right up until the hour Jesus was betrayed…

At the last supper…Luke 22:24 And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest.

 22. 22. But Jesus keeps marching on to Calvary…

Then about a 10-12 days before his crucifixion He receives a message that Lazurus is sick…

But waited for 2 more days… then started to Bethany..

This would ultimately cause the Pharisees to step up their efforts..

 23. 23. Marching on…

He gets there…

He raises Lazarus from the dead…

Word starts spreading…

The Pharisees call a meeting.. They are scared of losing their power, influence, and money.. and the Bible says…

John 11:53 Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.

 24. 24. Jesus spends his last Sabbath

in the home of Lazarus and Lazarus’ two sisters, Mary and Martha…

This is when Mary anoints Jesus with a costly perfume, and of course Judas says she shouldn’t have done it…

But Jesus says…John 12:7 Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.

This makes Judas angry.. he is embarrassed and goes to the chief priests….

The plot thickens…

 25. 25. His triumphant entry!!

Jesus leaves Bethany onto Bethpage…

On a colt…

 26. 26. Why a colt?

In time of war, kings rode into cities on stallions…

in time of peace, they rode in on colts…

People praising Him… Hosanna, Hosanna… (save now, save now)

The people still didn’t understand that in order for them to be truly saved, He had to die…

 27. 27. The disciples must have been so proud…

His time has come.. .surely these people will crown him King… and then the Romans will be sorry…

Peter with his chest out… proud… “finally I gave up fishing, and it is now worth it.”

James and John joking over who is really going to be most powerful.

Andrew… used to bringing a few to Jesus at a time, now all these people.

Judas…About time… a military revolt..Maybe secretly hoping he will be head of the Kingdom IRS!!

Thomas… a little doubtful on what was going to happen next…

Maybe some that he healed.. Blind Bartimaeus, Jarius’s daughter… the woman with the issue of blood, some healed lepers…

 28. 28. But others were there also..

Some with squinty eyes hoping that He will mess up…

They were all there in Jerusalem - loving faces - sinister faces - anxious apostles. Crowds almost trampling one another –

when suddenly - the whole procession stopped.

 29. 29. Was it something up ahead…

It was Jesus himself that had stopped… in the middle of this party for him.. He stands there…..

weeping….

 30. 30. Luke 19:41-44

(41) As He approached and saw the city, He wept over it,

(42) saying, "If you knew this day what leads to peace--but now it is hidden from your eyes.

(43) For the days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you, surround you, and hem you in on every side.

(44) They will crush you and your children within you to the ground, and they will not leave one stone on another in you, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation."

 31. 31. He stands there crying over Jerusalem…

IF ONLY they would have received their messiah, they could have been saved from the tragedy of the year 70 AD..

 32. 32.

General Titus surrounds Jerusalem, and starves the people inside trying to get them to surrender…

Then the massacre..

the blood…

the needless slaughter of the Jews…

IF ONLY they would have accepted Jesus…

 33. 33. But instead of crowning him with a king’s crown, they crown him with a crown of thorns!!!
 34. 34. They yell “Crucify Him.”
 35. 35. His disciples desert Him…
 36. 36. Peter denies Him…
 37. 37. And then…

Luke 22:61-62

(61) And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.

(62) And Peter went out, and wept bitterly.

 38. 38. Put yourself in Jesus’ place…

The whole weight of the world on His shoulders…

His closest companions for the last three years ran like cowards..

Peter.. the one that surely he chose to be the first leader of the church…just denied even knowing Him…

 39. 39. He was alone…

Alone….

Except for God His father…

God was still there… He could still draw strength from His Father… He knew his father loved him, even if others turned their backs on Him…

 40. 40.

The trials, the beatings, the loneliness… even a stranger to help him carry His cross…. The nails… the thirst, the pain, the dehydration… Muscles tensing, the jeers of the crowd… the gambling…

 41. 41.

The trials, the beatings, the loneliness… even a stranger to help him carry His cross…. The nails… the thirst, the pain, the dehydration… Muscles tensing, the jeers of the crowd… the gambling…

But His father was right there with Him the way He had been from eternity…
 42. 42. Then…. Something happened….

God the father placed all of our sins on Jesus!!!!!!!

Jesus felt the rejection of the Father… For the father couldn’t look upon our sin….

 43. 43. Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?

My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me?!!!

 44. 44. Such loneliness all because of us…

OUR sin…

OUR failures…

OUR shortcomings…

OUR Pride

OUR lies, stealing, adultery, unrighteous anger, grudges, gossip, hatred,

ALL of our sins……piled on Jesus

Jesus lost his innocence on the cross of Calvary.

Then for the first and last time in History, God the Father was separated from God the Son! All because of you and me!

HE LOVES YOU!

Do you love Him?
