  32. 32. The Managerial Blue Hat Thinker An effective problem solver have to manage and direct their thought in a proactive way. They must process and guide each of their thoughts in a neutral and unbiased manner, focusing on improving the effectiveness and efficiency of the process. We will discuss each characteristics and attributes of the Blue Thinking Hat. We will delve into the roles, goals and objectives of a blue hat thinker, that will help you to think more managerially about your daily life problems and circumstances. New ideas using Hats to stimulate and challenge thinking
  33. 33. The Role In exactly the same way a blue hat manages the thinking process allowing for better synergy between the thought patterns and habits of the other thinking hats. Let’s take a look at some of the blue hat’s key roles in a little more detail: The metaphorical role of the blue hat is the Movie Director. A movie director manages actors, cameramen, shooting angles, props, scripts and other factors that are critical to creating a successful blockbuster movie experience. New ideas using Hats to stimulate and challenge thinking
  34. 34. Think about Thinking The primary role of the blue hat is to think about the process of thinking. Every thought that it has is focused on improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the thinking process that filters through the other five hats. The smoother, faster and more proficient this process becomes, the greater the possibility that an effective solution to the problem can be found. New ideas using Hats to stimulate and challenge thinking
  35. 35. Define the Problem The blue hat must clearly define the problem under question in writing. If you fail to define the problem clearly and meticulously, then you will waste precious time directing your energies on irrelevant thoughts and activities that only lead to dead-ends and promises of better answers. New ideas using Hats to stimulate and challenge thinking
  36. 36. Gather Global Perspective About Problem and Solution The blue hat is very much removed from the problem and its associated solutions. It rather sits back and plays the role of a court judge, who oversees the facts, arguments and opinions of every hat from a global perspective. It then uses these insights to decide on a suitable plan of action that will help nullify this problem and set the course for a brighter destination. New ideas using Hats to stimulate and challenge thinking
  37. 37. New ideas using individual Hats to stimulate and challenge thinking. Manage Other Hats The blue hat plays the part of a manager looking after the subordinates under its care. Within this role, the blue hat helps to improve the flow of communication between all the hats, thereby encouraging better insights and ideas that will bring about ideal solutions to the problem at hand.
  38. 38. Manage Time The blue hat understands the importance of time and how critical it is to the effective management of the problem solving process. As a result the blue hat plays the role of the timekeeper, by allocating specific chunks of time to the other hats and to specific topics that are necessary to bring about effective solutions to the problem at hand. The blue hat is consciously aware at all times that time is precious and should be spent wisely on areas that will bring about the highest thinking returns to help overcome a problem successfully. New ideas using Hats to stimulate and challenge thinking
  39. 39. Manage Flow of Ideas The blue hat’s role is to manage the flow of ideas between the hats with the greatest of efficiency. Each thinking hat has a set of unique ideas, approaches and perspectives. The blue hat must merge these unique thoughts in a constructive way, otherwise the thought process will stumble and stagnate in the face of adversity. The blue hat must successfully piece together all of these scattered thoughts and grow them into something that will bring about an ideal solution to the problem at hand. New ideas using Hats to stimulate and challenge thinking
  40. 40. Manage Implementation of Ideas Unique and creative ideas are wonderful, however unless we find a means of integrating them into our physical reality, then we will simply fail to grasp the opportunities that are being presented before us. For this very reason, the blue hat’s final role is to manage the implementation of ideas by bringing them forth into the world in the most effective and efficient way. 41. 41. Summary & Debrief This forces you to move outside your habitual thinking style, and helps you to get a more rounded view of a situation. Looking at a Decision From All Points of View 'Six Thinking Hats' is an important and powerful technique. It is used to look at decisions from a number of important perspectives. Many successful people think from a very rational, positive viewpoint. This is part of the reason that they are successful.
  42. 42. Looking at a Decision From All Points of View Similarly, pessimists may be excessively defensive, and more emotional people may fail to look at decisions calmly and rationally. 'Six Thinking Hats' technique helps solve a problem using all approaches. Decisions and plans mixes ambition, skill in execution, public sensitivity, creativity and good contingency planning. Often also many fail to look at a problem from an emotional, intuitive, creative or negative viewpoint. They underestimate resistance to plans, fail to make creative leaps and do not make essential contingency plans. Summary & Debrief
  43. 43. Summary & Debrief It is used to look at decisions from a number of important perspectives. This forces you to move outside your habitual thinking style, and helps you to get a more rounded view of a situation. Looking at a Decision From All Points of View 'Six Thinking Hats' is an important and powerful technique.
  44. 44. 45 Application example of Six Thinking Hats The directors of a property company are looking at whether they should construct a new office building. The economy is doing well, and the amount of vacant office space is reducing sharply. As part of their decision they decide to use the 6 Thinking Hats technique during a planning meeting.
  45. 45. 46 Application example of Six Thinking Hats Looking at the problem with the White Hat, they analyze the data they have. They examine the trend in vacant office space, which shows a sharp reduction. They anticipate that by the time the office block would be completed, that there will be a severe shortage of office space. Current government projections show steady economic growth for at least the construction period.
  46. 46. 47 Application example of Six Thinking Hats With Red Hat thinking, some of the directors think the proposed building looks quite ugly. While it would be highly cost-effective, they worry that people would not like to work in it.
  47. 47. 48 With Green Hat thinking they consider whether they should change the design to make the building more pleasant. Perhaps they could build prestige offices that people would want to rent in any economic climate. Application example of Six Thinking Hats Alternatively, maybe they should invest the money in the short term to buy up property at a low cost when a recession comes.
  48. 48. 49 He or she may have needed to keep other members of the team from switching styles, or from criticizing other peoples' points. It is well worth reading Edward de Bono's book 6 Thinking Hats for more information on this technique. Application example of Six Thinking Hats The Blue Hat has been used by the meeting's Chair to move among the different thinking styles.
  49. 49. Carrots Sticks 50 Summary & Debrief Six Thinking Hats is a practical, fast paced, fun, interactive and remarkably effective tool ... of the 21st Century ‘New Thinking’ considering all perspective of views. The old methods of the “carrot and stick” reward and punishment as methods of persuasion ⇒ Using a mixture of carrot and stick are much less effective now.
  50. 50. Key Points De Bono's Six Thinking Hats is a good technique to look at the effects of a decision from different points of view. It allows necessary emotion and skepticism to be brought into what would otherwise be purely rational decisions. It helps persistently pessimistic people to be positive and creative. Plans developed using the '6 Thinking Hats' technique will be sounder and more resilient than would otherwise.  It also helps to avoid public relations mistakes, and spot good reasons not to follow a course of action before you have committed to it.
