Although much of the local news media is focused on the
unpredicted spread of the enterovirus D68 (EV-D68), the
Columbia County Department of Health cautions against
a much more widespread illness that affects
approximately 5-20 percent of Americans each year: the
seasonal flu.

3.  While EV-D68 and the flu are different types of
diseases, they share many of the same symptoms
and methods of transmission, and preventive
measures can help prevent potentially serious
outbreaks of either.
According to the Centers for Disease Control,
enteroviruses such as EV-D68 tend to peak in the
summer and fall, while the flu is more widespread
during the late fall and winter. One of the simplest
ways to prevent the spread of the flu virus is to get
vaccinated. However, flu viruses constantly change
and mutate over time, and the immune system often
can’t recognize the virus from year to year.

4.  Flu vaccines are kept up to date to provide
protection from three or four of the most common
strains, which is why it’s important to receive a
vaccination every year. Vaccinations are generally
safe for everyone six months and older.
Even with a vaccination, it’s important to develop
hygienic habits, such as washing your hands regularly
and avoiding touching the eyes or mouth after
contact with doorknobs and similar public surfaces.
As a courtesy to others, try to cover coughs and
sneezes with a shoulder or tissue (not the hands).
Infected individuals can spread the virus to others as
early as one day before symptoms appear and as
late as a week after.
