Is a comforter identical to a duvet? Though a lot of people in the United States think so, traditionally
duvets and comforters aren’t the same. aren’t identical, at least from a historical standpoint. A duvet,
traditionally speaking, is the only cover a sleeping person uses, while a comforter is normally used with a
sheet, and often with a blanket, also.
In Australia, duvets were originally referred to as “continental quilts,” and today they are often referred
to as “doonas.” Today, some Europeans call any thick blanket a duvet.
Originally, a duvet’s filling was made of down from the eider duck; “duvet” means “duck” in French.
These days, though, the filling can instead be made of goose down, feathers, wool, Egyptian cotton
sheets, silk, synthetics or a combination of materials.

duvets. However, some industrial silk duvets don’t live up to that recognition.
Silk cocoons can be collected from the wild (tussah silk) or from domesticated plants (mulberry silk).
Tussah silk comes from wild worms that feed on oak leaves. Tussah cocoons are dark brown in colour
and are coarse in texture. Tussah threads aren’t as springy as mulberry threads, and they have a
irregular surface. Tussah material typically produces a coarse fabric that is worthwhile for curtains and
Egyptian cotton bedding spreads; but unfortunately, it is on occasion used to fill duvets.
Domesticated silkworms are only fed mulberry leaves. Mulberry cocoons have a pearly colour and are
finer, smoother, more round and smaller in shape than tussah cocoons. Mulberry silk is loaded with
amino acids and proteins.
Mulberry silk feels magically soft to the touch and has a fine fibre.
There is also a large difference between hand-extracted and machine-extracted silk.
Hand-extracted silk is washed by hand and then manually stretched into a net shape. It's then set out in
partial shade to dry naturally. Then it is layered by hand, which traps air between the layers and
guarantees the filling is spread evenly throughout the duvet.

2. Because hand-extracted silk is naturally dried and contains no bleach or chemical softeners, it smells
fresh. It also has a natural pearl colour, due to the fact that no chemicals were ever used on it in any
phase of the manufacturing process. Machine-extracted silk is white from being bleached.
In machine-extraction, they ordinarily dump large amounts of cocoons into a machine and boil them,
turning them yellow; which is why they need to be bleached. Usually, industrial softeners are applied to
the silk.
The bigger sheets they use tend to mat up, and less air is trapped between the silk layers; so these
duvets aren’t as warm or as soft as hand-extracted duvets.
Some other types of duvets are made out of chopped, short fibres of broken silk mat (usually from
tussah silk) that have to be sewn together, oft-times producing a duvet with cool spots. In many cases,
these broken fibres are set in the middle of the duvet, surrounded by a border of good, long silk floss.
