I. Show us an activity you enjoydoing. Tell us how you think itcontributes to your personaland professional developmentA few years ago I decided I wanted to get fit andhealthy, so I found a training program and started running.Soon I realized that I could learn valuable lessonsapplicable to my personal and professional life.
Planningis KeyTraining for a race requires a plan andpreparation. While preparing for myfirst 10km race I realized that having atraining schedule would make it mucheasier. Also getting the rightequipment, in particular my runningshoes, improved my performance andreduced my fatigue day after day.In business, planning and preparationare also very important to achieve yourgoals. For instance, in my workexperience having Marketing / Salesplans with some scenarios allowed meto steer my Brands / Sales to achievesuccess. The training received andtools given by my company, allowedme to be prepared for the challenges Ihad.
Set Objectivesand Control themSet your race, your pace and preparefor it. While preparing for long distanceruns I realized that running is alsoabout Strategy. For a goodperformance I divide my objectives in:short term and long term. To controlmy goals, I use a watch that helps mechecking if I am on track or if I need tointroduce corrective measures. In business, you need to haveobjectives and be strategic about whatyou do. For example, while working insales I realized that only with my dailyactions and step by step I would reachmy long term goals. To control them, Iestablished with my team a set ofindicators that helped us to evaluateour situation and keep our focus.
Give and GetSupportKnowledge is power. When you aretalking about running there is a lot tobe learnt. The moment I startedrunning I read about it on the internetand asked for support from moreexperienced runners. When I had somekilometers on my legs I realized thatnot only I positively influenced othersto start running but also that peoplesearched me for advise. In business, it is very important to besurrounded by people who can helpyou and teach you. In my experienceas a team member, I always askedwhen I had doubts and supportedwhen I was asked. To give and get it isvery important when leading teams.
Discipline yourBody and MindRunning taught me that the only way toachieve my objectives was to bedisciplined. It takes perseverance to goout running every day and particularlyon cold, rainy days. I have learnt thatmy mind was my worst enemy onlydefeated with mental discipline.Running is hard, so when your mindblocks, strong commitment andattitude are important, specially whenyou are tired and in “pain”.In business, I soon found out that onlywith discipline I would cope with thedeadlines on my projects. When timesare tough, only with a good planning, apositive attitude and a “never give up”mentality I am capable to keep ongoing and reach my objectives.
Have Funand Enjoy the RideRunning is also about having fun. While travelling for leisure or work, Iuse running as a way of getting toknow the cities I visit in a different way. When training in my city, I sometimesdo it with friends as it is a good way ofsocializing. In business, it is very easy to get lostin planning, setting objectives andachieving goals. I realized that this isdefinitely important but it is alsoimportant to enjoy the ride. Idiscovered that to feel accomplished Ineeded not only to enjoy my work, butalso the people I work with. Thecombination of both helped me to be abetter leader and in the end a betterprofessional.
In conclusion, running has taught me valuablelessons that today I apply in business and life ingeneral.• Teaches you that Planning is Key• Helps you developing a Strategy and Setting Objectives• Reminds you that is very important to Give and Get• Teaches you Discipline and pushing you to the limits• Reminds you that it is important to Have Fun
