  1. 1. How to create a Reference Sheet. APA Style Guide
  2. 2. How to create a Reference Sheet.  Why do we need to learn to do any type of bibliography sheet?  You need to let the reader know where the information came from in a paper, because often the information your are using is not your own.  If you do not do this it is called plagiarism and the penalty can be extreme.
  3. 3. How to create a Reference Sheet. Every single one of the sources that you paraphrase or directly quote in your essay should go on the Reference sheet.
  4. 4. How to create a Reference Sheet.  You SHOULD be looking at more sources than you quoted from to give your sources credibility. The idea is that you use a source but get others sources to make sure it is accurate.
  5. 5. How to create a Reference Sheet.  There are some simple rules to follow no matter which APA sheet you are handing in. ALWAYS list your sources alphabetically by authors LAST name. If there is no author then you use the first FULL word of the article title; note A, AN, AND, OF and THE do not count.
  6. 6. How to create a Reference Sheet. Example: Boogey, Tony.(Sept. 16, 2010) Halloween Horrors In Movie Reviews. Retrieved October 2008 from http://www.mrqe.com A Driving Law Changes. (July 16, 2010) The Hamilton Spectator. pp.A6. Note the B comes before D (and we ignore the A in the second title).
  7. 7. How to create a Reference Sheet. Boogey, Tony.(Sept. 16, 2010) Halloween Horrors In Movie Reviews. Retrieved October 2008 from http://www.mrqe.com A Driving Law Changes. (July 16, 2010) The Hamilton Spectator. pp. A6. Also note that the first line is all the way to the margin, whereas the rest of the lines for the same source are tabbed over once. That makes it easier for the reader to distinguish where one source finishes and the next one starts.
  8. 8. How to create a Reference Sheet. Boogey, Tony.(Sept. 16, 2010) Halloween Horrors InMovie Reviews. Retrieved October 2008 from http://www.mrqe.com A Driving Law Changes. (July 16, 2010) The Hamilton Spectator. pp.A6. And finally note – each line needs to be double spaced – not just between sources but within sources themselves.
  9. 9. How to create a Reference Sheet.  EVERY single source has a little different way of writing up the information – PAY ATTENTION to the booklet you have been given as it shows EXACTLY how each source is to be used!  If all else fails – ASK THE LIBRARIAN! That is what we are here for.
  10. 10. How to create a Reference Sheet.  And remember: No matter what you do – quoting and paraphrasing TOO much is always better than not doing it enough.
