1. 1. CIUOnline Migration Forum
Fourth forum on the ongoing migration
of the former CIUOnline (ciuonline.com) and CIUNet (ciu.edu/ciunet) to the New CIUOnline (online.ciu.edu)
Friday, February 12 2010
1:15PM - 2:15PM
Pamplin
2. 2. Now announcing the new website address for the new CIUOnlinehttp://online.ciu.edu
No longer www.ciuonline.com
www.ciuonline.com currently redirects users to http://online.ciu.edu
www.ciuonline.com will be phased out towards the end of the current academic year
The New Website
RECAP INFORMATION….
3. 3. RECAP INFORMATION….
The New New Look
4. 4. Use your same username and password you used to login to the former CIUOnline or CIUNet.
REMINDER: All CIUOnline users (faculty/staff/students) are now required to reset their passwords annually for security reasons.
Logging into the new CIUOnline
RECAP INFORMATION….
5. 5. Some items migrated to new CIUOnline directly
Other items located in Legacy Applications box on Home page
Where to find former CIUOnline applications on the new CIUOnline
RECAP INFORMATION….
6. 6.

In this current phase of the migration, we will be focusing on moving actual departmental pages formerly found on CIUNet in the Resources section
 7. 7. These departmental pages will be located under the Resourcestab on the new CIUOnline.
 8. 8. This will require further coordination between IT Services and departments
 9. 9. This will involve participation from site content editors (those who edited the former departmental pages on CIUNet or CIUOnline)
 10. 10. This will require training in the areas of content editing in the new CIUOnline
 11. 11. When we have completed the entire process, we will notify campus wide users. Departments are responsible for educating users outside of their departments as well when appropriate.

We have training resources available on our Information Technology site in the Resources tab on CIUOnline.
Migration of departmental pages to the new CIUOnline
RECAP INFORMATION….
12. 12. RECAP INFORMATION….
13. 13. Below are a few of the reasons migrating CIUNet to CIUOnline is advantageous:
A more centralized hub of information for both faculty/staff and University students.
CIUOnline content editor is more intuitive than CIUNet’s content editor
Many aspects in CIUOnline are natively integrated with the EX database system providing many opportunities for information collected in EX to be accessible/distributed (in some cases, certain information would not have been accessible via CIUNet)
CIUOnline gives us more potential integration with several 3rd party applications to offload technology costs.
Why are we migrating CIUNet to CIUOnline?
14. 14. Careful planning
Who will be the primary content coordinator/editor of your site?
Just because something was done one way in CIUNet does not mean that way should be continued.
Use this as an opportunity to re-evaluate the way business/information is being distributed.
For example, is CIU.edu or SharePoint a better option?
Is the information still considered relevant?
Locate files on your site that need to be migrated over
Word, Excel, PDF files will migrate fine
Audio and video files should migrate fine as well, but we want to consider size factors
Hands on training sessions will need to be scheduled with those coordinating/editing the content for your department
Key items for departments to consider during this migration
15. 15. Student directory
IT Services site
Registrar’s Office site (including course registration components)
Prospective Students
Library
Office of Institutional Effectiveness (in progress)
Marketing (in progress)
Human Resources (in progress)
Career Services (in progress)
Accounting (in progress)
Physical Plant (in progress)
Other items and or departments that have already been migrated…
16. 16. How will users get to new CIUOnline pages while CIUNet still active
A migration can be a very confusing process to everyone. During this time, we will leave the CIUNet Resources site as is while simply redirecting the main departmental links to their new pages on CIUOnline. This means that users can still go to CIUNet for the time being and get access to the new information on CIUOnline without actually going to online.ciu.edu. But this only gives us time to re-education everyone effectively and in the near future, there will be no need to go to CIUNet directly, but Online.ciu.edu instead.
17. 17. Demonstration the new CIUOnline
Let’s go…
CIUONline (http://online.ciu.edu)
18. 18. Demonstration of other features offered in the new CIUOnline for departments…
Web forms
Departments now have the capability of creating their own web forms that email data to a specified email address
Using this feature will require some HTML knowledge
Calendars
Calendars can be created and available for subscription by users
Events can be imported from .csv format
Documents share folders
This function is similar to the directory storage area in CIUNet, however, users have more flexibility in clicking on documents stored here.
Several file formats can be uploaded in these portlets
19. 19. What about other CIUNet sites that are not necessarily department focused or under Resources?
Announcements/Bulletin area
Allowance Update area
Photos area
Enrollment statistics area
Directories area
News area
Calendars area
Surveys area
